There are some basic rules for any kind of stretching, including yoga, that I might practice.
1. I will not require of my testicles the burden of supporting my entire body mass, or even large parts thereof.
2. Splits of any sort should not involve the feeling of splitting skin or connective tissues.
There are others, but those are a couple of the important ones.
Avoiding self injury in any sort of flexibility exercise is just like anything else; push yourself, but listen to your body when warns you of physical limits. Pushing past that is a ticket to pain.
