I've been seeing the world "Troll" pop up on a few forums, and I just want to know: what is your personal definition of a troll? Since it's a new, internet-based word (in the context of language, a 20 year old word is fairly young, fuck), I think that it's meaning is still up for debate.

And you can be sarcastic and "cute" and say something about mythical creatures who live under bridges. No matter what, somebody's going to chuckle to themselves and post that, so it might as well be you.

my personal definition: It's someone who's main reason to post on RJ is to stir the pot by attacking other people/groups and/or their contributions, values and beliefs.

It's not a new word but it's usually a guy who posts things on personals websites like Gaydar who puts up a picture of someone else as their profile picture and tries to get you to send them nudes of yourself and send kinky emails.
They usually lead you on in hopes of a meet up and if you actually do they aren't like what their profile says (like a troll in some mythology where they disguise themselves as human but when revealed they are hideous monsters). And that's how the term "trolling the internet" came about.

this will help you to further understand a troll :d

or if you're too lazy I just give you the quick summary : D

EDTrolling is a kind of prank and a lost art form, full of failed attempts and people who don't even know what trolling is.

Most people think that trolling is merely someone getting in an argument, or a fight, or attacking others. However, people do this all the time on the internet when they're not trolling. Trolling that does this is obvious and usually fails. People who think everyone who disagrees with them is a troll are so easily trolled that they'll fall for Concerned Mother. A skilled troll can just appear to cause no conflict and agree with people and do it in such a way to provoke everyone else into a shitstorm.

The internet is full of people that think just being internet trash makes them a real troll. Acting racist for lulz is trolling but simply being a racist is not. Acting as stupid as Chris-chan because you really are that stupid makes you a lulzcow and not a troll. If someone goes and slips razor blades inside the hamburgers of little kids and goes "haha you have been trolled nublol", despite being hilarious, that's not trolling, it's being a psychopath and a poser. Even worse than that, there are furries. Common sense would say that no one could seriously be like that, that all furries are trolls, but then again, common sense is often very, very wrong.

Even when someone knows how to troll, they usually fail to be funny and then experience troll's remorse A.K.A being a butthurt, empathetic, douchenozzle. Such feelings tend to pass once they realize that people who take the Internets seriously enough to get upset by trolling really ought to kill themselves. Once they reach this point, they are said to suffer from Internet troll personality disorder. After long enough, they may even develop Chronic Troll Syndrome.

The most important thing that any troll should remember is not to believe in what you are saying, and be comfortable with telling made up lies whilst avoiding the truth or any factual details about your own life because not only are these boring, they could be used to identify you (unless, of course, you also lie about the details of your life.) To avoid the onset of troll's remorse, follow this technique and just lead them further down the avenue of trolling, swallowing your bait hook, line and sinker.

Only when one is a skilled troll can they pull off trolling IRL, such as Agent Pubeit, Penis Pump Sex Scandal, IRL Harry Potter spoilers, etc.

LOLWUT? That ED page was a long winded description of a troll.
First of all, some things to clear up..
    • In terms of the internet, troll and trolling is not a new word. It's been around before the OP was even born.
    • A troll is not an older gay man that goes for younger guys. I see it being used in that context a lot here.
    • A troll is not an abrasive person that lacks interpersonal skills or tact. That person is just an asshole.
    • A troll is not a fake profile on a gay site.
    • A troll is not someone that has a different opinion than yours. Most of the time, at least.

The term "troll" is derived from fishing terminology. Trolling is when you toss out fish guts (chum) in the ocean from your boat. The chum is sort of a bait to attract fish.

So in terms of the internet, a troll is someone that posts somewhat inflammatory or controversial topics (bait), with the hopes of inciting a flame war and/or to stir up up emotions (hook and reel). Some people get off from stirring things up. I guess they're bored.

Obvious trolls are obvious. Those are easy to ignore. But the better trolls usually post a topic that has some merit for discussion. A common technique for trolls is to use circular reasoning to "back up" their stance on a particular topic. Unfortunately, most people don't realize it. And they exert a lot of time and effort to convince the person (troll) that his opinion is flawed.

I mean new in terms of language, not the internet. (But I did write that in a confusing way.) If a word is only 50 years old, it's still fairly young considering that Modern English is about 500 years old.

    For fuck's sake.

"World Troll?" What is the difference between a "world troll" and a regular troll.......the amount of the globe he transverses?

To be real, I think of a troll as a guy who won't take part in much of anything but instead chooses to lurk, either in the shadows staring at people (like in the locker room) or online - just ogling all of our pictures. To me, a troll is a social outcast who doesn't even try to join in - but prefers to lurk and stare.

    Another fine example.

To the OP, it is not his political views that make him a troll. What makes him a troll is the way he is trying to flamebait this thread, or in other words subvert an unrelated thread into a polemic about his favorite issue, namely that he is a poor oppressed victim here because he is conservative.

An ugly mythological creature found in various sizes... small ones tend to live under bridges and harrass goats, big ones live near Hogwarts and can be dangerous, especially when cornered in a bathroom.

    Oh... you meant internet trolls?

Bullshit. Curiousjockaz is about as republican as you can get, but has never earned the title of troll. We libs all disagree with him, but most of us like and respect him because he makes an effort to engage us in civil conversation even at those times when we might not be acting civilly ourselves. You're a troll because you get off on antagonizing people to the point that they lash out. A troll makes himself as unlikable as possible because he gets a sick thrill out of being a focus for negativity. You're a textbook definition of a troll and it has nothing to do with your political leanings. You're a one trick pony and politics just happens to be your weapon of choice when it comes to starting shit.

while we're on the subject of interwebz gnarlies, i've heard the term "sock puppet" before. i think that is someone who creates a second (or third or fourth) screen name and then either a) praises/supports his own view point by making it look like he has "friends," b) trolls on the sly, (he might even call himself out) or c) indulges his/(her) several personalities from his/her real life, i.e., craziness.

sometimes just referred to as a sock...not to be confused with a "load sock" which is something else entirely.

On political forums or blogs - the classic troll is someone who poses as a disaffected Democrat or Independent, and posts comments about how unhappy he/she is with Obama, or the Democrats in Congress.
About how "disappointed" they are by what the Dems have or haven't done yet, and how Obama and the Dems aren't true progressives.
About how there's really no difference between the Dems and the Repubs, so you might as well just check out of politics and stay home on election day.
MEANWHILE - they are actually closeted REPUBLICANS who are trying to brainwash squishy Dems and left leaning Independents into NOT showing up to vote on election day, in the hopes of having an overwhelmingly Republican turnout - just like in 1994, when the Repubs took control of Congress.

DO NOT be fooled by "independent" posters (like Southbeach) who ONLY post comments (propaganda) critical of the Democrats.

    BEWARE THE TROLLS.
