Absolutely beautiful. When St. Helens blew when I was kid, there were spectacular lightening effects all the way into Eastern Washington where I lived. This is a whole different level of beauty. icon_eek.gif

After having that first pic as a desktop background for a while, I got to look at it closely...I think, no, I KNOW it's fake.

There is a lightning plug-in for Photoshop that I have experience with, and that shot is made of the exact same colors and patterns as the plug-in's defaults. Then it was put into Lightroom to add the lighting effects of the lightning.

Here is a picture of REAL lightning which I took during a t-storm:

Compare the two closely and you'll see that the first volcano pic is fake.

This volcano in Iceland is presenting some of the best examples of lightning caused by an eruption ever seen. The phenomena is well known, but this high degree is virtually unprecedented.

Interestingly, even in this day & age the exact cause is not well understood. I'm reading theories that it's related to the high water content in the plume, as the snow cover melts. Other scientists think it may be a result of the nature of the volcanic material being expelled. But countless photographs and motion pictures are being taken of it, and it's not Photoshopped.

    sounds fake to me!

doing photography I'm trying to understand how the picture can be so crisp understandanding that to get this kind of picture you gotta keep the shutter open for some time and the fact that the smoke is going up... and I don't see any clouds in the sky to have this kind of thunderstorm...

So I'm not convinced at all

On my lightning shot above, I left the shutter open for 30 seconds. The reason it's so clear is that the sky was completely dark, so when the lightning stuck, it briefly lit the sky for only a few milliseconds.

As for the volcano pic, the pic itself is real, as you can tell by the "blur" created by moving flaming projectiles. But the lightning was Photoshopped in with the Alien Skin Eye Candy plug-in for Photoshop that contains the lightning effect.

However, a volcano ash cloud CAN produce lightning because of the friction created from the blasts. If you google, you can find other volcano shots that contain real lightning.

How can you get a volcano in Iceland? Isn't it too cold? When you think of a volcano, you think of Hawaii and long words like that...

People in Iceland probably think our language is fucked up. lol

Only the Icelanders know that we can’t pronounce the name of it. Thats why we should make up our own name for it cause nobody would even notice that we changed the name.

I root for the name "ass-kicker" for the volcano

"The ass-kicker is still exploding today, kicking your asses"
