Senator Lindsey Graham is currently being outed by a Conservative Anti-Immigration Group
William Gheen told a Tea Party crowd "I hope this secret isn't being used as leverage over Senator Graham, so today I think Senator Graham, you need to come forward and tell people about your alternative lifestyle and your homosexuality."

My parents are good friends with Lindsey and I've had dozens of conversations with him. And yet I don't know for a fact that he is gay.

He won't talk about his relationships, and never has from what I've learned from longterm friends.

About three years ago, he and I discussed ending DADT. He stated his personal opinion that DADT was wrongheaded and that, to roughtly quote Lindsey: "everyone knows lots of gays in the military and it's never been a problem".

Lindsey, whether gay or asexual, is an enlightened person but he knows the bigots he represents. I don't think he'll push any progressive ideas too far, for fear of the bigots.

Two years ago he got very bold in pushing for immigration reform but when 'The Bigot Shit' hit the fan, he sent out mailings to his constituents that made his position seem the reverse of his previous proposal.

The Tea Party bigots think he'll give in to liberal pressure. No Way! They own him and he won't disappoint.

I agree and I must say if he is gay then that statement is doubly sad

None of this is shocking, though, right? Not from the tea party and not from a conservative closeted politician. I wonder how Graham is working behind the seasons to quash this. What deals are being made, what kind of money is being exchanged?

Lindsay Graham is a closeted gay man. I've known it for a while partly because I'm gay and partly because I've been heavily embedded in South Carolina's politics for the past 3 years between activism and undergraduate study. Most South Carolinians are so out of the loop/ignorant of reality that they either don't know or don't care... all they care about is that he is a Republican who stands up for "morality," religion, and guns.

A few weeks ago, a Tea party group crashed one of his town hall meetings and were calling him a "homo" and that is was "time to go homo." Graham isn't the only closet case sadly. There are MANY "bachelor" politicians in SC... they all claim to be straight at 40-50 years old. South Carolina has a major issue with LBGT people, and many closeted politicians would rather further their careers and bash gay people in the political arena rather than come out.

Coming out will KILL your career in SC, politically. My friend was the first openly elected gay man in SC... to a school advisory board that no one really paid attention to. Had the residents been paying attention... he would have never been elected. He has told me about the discrimination he faces on the board from other board members. He tells people publicly he'll run again for this advisory board, but privately he told me that he is not running again. He is only interested in going to law school.

South Carolina has a closeted gay man running for governor this year... Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. He is the top Republican contender that most believe will be elected this year. http://www.andrebauer.com/

This man will be the next Jim McGreevey, I have no doubt about it. Our less esteemed Gov. Mark Sanford tried to out him when he got into this mess with the Argentine mistress back in June of last year.

Bauer publicly called for Sanford to resign... a few days later... the rumor mill went to work saying Bauer was a homo. Not a day later, Bauer went silent like a damn clam - not a single word about Sanford needing to resign. I know enough about SC politics to know Sanford orchestrated that to get Bauer off his ass - because Sanford knew that if Bauer was outed, his political career was OVER.

South Carolina's former state treasurer Thomas Ravenel went to federal prison for a few months on drug charges... he is also a closet case. Ravenel went to a (then) all male, military style undergraduate college here in Charleston (aka the Citadel) and is said to be on the DL with younger men in Charleston - he is in his mid-40s and unmarried.

Many members of the SC Legislature are closeted gay men. This is the state where gay politicians go to torture themselves.

That would be nice, but Arlen had some sensible policies before he left the GOP. Mr.Graham, however, never has. He consistently gets a 0% voting record on the HRC index. Arlen, on the other hand, had an excellent record on our issues his entire career, between 50%-100%.

That said, this Gheen guy is a piece of shit and I hope Lindsey comes out of the closet by publicly fucking him.

I guess this is why I've gotten three letters from his US Senate office in DC saying that DADT "works fine" and that he'll continue to support it.

It's good to know we have states where things are just like they were 50 years ago. Great for historical tourism, really.

"Come, see gay men beaten while the authorities chuckle on the sidelines!"

"Watch, as the women executive is sneered at and told to get coffee!"

"Thrill, as the black man is called "boy" and barricaded from entering the state university!"

"Listen, as sweaty overweight white folks who were born out of wedlock cluck disapprovingly over 'San Francisco Values'"

"All this and more, in your backwater vacation paradise!"

Graham will NEVER do this... if he does... he career is over. "Democrat" in SC is like being called a "man hoe" or "devil worshipping socialist"... it's not meant to be endearing. If I ran for public office today... I would not win unless it was in a heavily African American district. If they knew I was gay, I would never get past the primaries. It'll never happen unless aliens replace the population with drones...

According to a friend of mine from South Carolina, who now resides in California:

"... Next to my mother's pound cake recipe, this is the worst kept secret [Senator Lindsay Graham's sexuality] in South Carolina ...."

haha thanks... I was sadly watching a CNN report on my "other" US senator, Jim DeMint, wanting to be a presidential candidate in 2012... I temporarily went brain dead.

Here in DC, Lindsey Graham (with his effeminate southern voice) is known as "Aunt Pittypat." icon_lol.gif
She was the fussy old lady in Gone With the Wind who was always fanning herself and fainting.

Yes - I'm fairly certain he is gay. I just get that vibe from him. I don't claim that my gaydar is exceptional though. Every guy I've ever meet from Ohio or South Carolina and thought was gay... turned out to be gay - so take that for what it's worth. Why Ohio and SC in particular... no clue.

I heard something a while back about Bauer getting antsy in Columbia (SC capital) because someone was digging up dirt on him having hook ups with men at hotels, but that was also around the time Sanford was trying to get him to shut up last year after Sanford's affair became international news.

I don't know if it's true or not, but I wouldn't be surprised. "Hooking up" and not "coming out" seems to be popular for gay South Carolinians.

    Ryan SC,

YES, in private, Lindsey told me that he thought DADT was wrongheaded and needed to be changed, and that everyone who serves has known gays in the military and there's been no problems.

BUT NOPE, I've never heard him express that view public or in his mailings to the bigots back home.

And I remember well a conversation from around the '08 election when he was ranting about how despicable FoxNews and Rush were. Yeah, I don't think he's ever stated that publicly either.

It's very interesting to hear about the fact that the Tea Party is even more vehemently anti-gay than the Repubs who don't identify as teabaggers, and that the baggers are trying to purify the Republican party of gay representatives.

I had thought that the teabaggers were supposedly focused only on fiscal matters, taxes, and the National Debt, and weren't into the religious right culture war.
But, I guess, given the stridently hateful tone of the teabaggers in general, it shouldn't come as a big surprise.

It's also interesting to ponder the fact that Graham and John McCain are known to have an extremely close and intimate personal relationship.
    Hmmmmm...
Maybe, in 2008 we not only had the first black candidate for president, but we also had a gay or bi candidate on the ballot too.

    Good point. Hate breeds hate.

The Tea Party was founded on FEAR(not unreasonably considering our sinking economy at the time, and a near worldwide depression).

But Tea Partiers didn't come together to seek solutions. They had no interest in uniting America with a 'common purpose'. NOPE, working together is their idea of Socialism.

They came to Blame, Hate and Suspect anyone who wasn't their imaginary self image.

Turning on the Gays was an obvious next step in their purge.
