3 friends and I will be heading out on a multi-week west coast road trip in a few weeks, from San Diego all the way up the coast to Washington. So I have two questions:

    1) Any ideas/tips for staying in shape during the trip? Diet is my biggest worry due to gas station stops and living out of a car. I should be able to find time for a quick run each day or time to knock out some push-ups/pull-ups for some exercise.

    2) Any must-see places/events along this route? We're already hitting the larger cities and a few other places in between, but I love finding the hidden gems while traveling...small towns, interesting events(was hoping to catch Bay to Breakers in SF but it's too early), etc. Our ultimate goal is to make it to Sasquatch music festival memorial day weekend.

Hope you guys can contribute some good ideas!

You can always run at the beginning of each day before you get in your car

Are you literally living out of the car, as you state, or overnighting at motels? If the latter, and you don't have your reservations yet, try to choose ones that offer workout equipment, or at least pools so you can do some laps.

I lived 5 years in Washington State, and know northern Oregon a little, too. You want to take US Rt 101 up the coast, especially beautiful when you get to the Olympic Peninsula. Take it around to Port Angeles, with side trips into Olympic National Forest, and rive up to Hurricane Ridge. Too much to write in detail here, but email me if you'd like more info. If you are camping, I can recommend some beautiful WA campsites that are quite reasonable.

There we go, that's the kind of stuff I'm looking for! RedVespa I'll shoot you an email as I'm sure you have some great ideas. And ThelStrat, I'm hoping to get a run in each day and some pushups/pull ups...just hoping for some new ideas to change things up and get more creative.

Diet is my biggest worry due to gas station stops and living out of a car.

Buy healthy snacks like trail mix and fruit for the road. There are Trader Joe's all up and down that region.

    Cannon Beach, Oregon

Vacations are important. Don't derail your enjoyment by getting too caught up about fitness concerns. Incorporating lots of fruit is a good idea.
