    hey guys,

Ive been curious, why can't i seem to get a 6 pack? i seem to be stuck with a 4 pack lol. i see these guys with smaller abs that are closer together and each one of mine are huge i feel like maybe my body's kind of awkwardly put together in that way. probably just genetics but if anyone has any suggestions that i could work on shoot em my way.

First, let me say I think you look just great the way you are.

I'm not an expert but things that seemed to have worked for guys I know is adding more resistance to abdominal work - like medicine balls, weight plates etc. when using an incline bench. Also, it seems the most important thing in getting the abs to pop is to get your body fact low, really low, like down to 8% or less.

It´s probably genetic. What your abs will look like when the body fat is low enough depends on genetics. Hard to tell from the pics...

Don´t worry about it, you look great already, and keep training. If there is more there it will come out.

Your abs are the same as mine would be if I got my bf% low enough (it was like that in years gone by). I have realised a long time ago that I would never have the perfect six pack that other guys can have, so for the time being I'm not too bothered about getting the fat down enough to show it - that's going to be the last thing on the list for me, body wise.

I think you should just accept that everyone is built differently and make the most of what you got dealt by genetics etc, which I think you're already doing!

after viewing your pics here; i suggest that you need to eat more protien and lift with some heavier weights, adding some bulk and muscle to your body, instead of worrying about 2 more rows of ab muscles that you surely do not need. icon_idea.gif

That's really out of line. His body is very nice. Many would say he is perfect. Just because you like bulky guys does not mean everybody wants to be bulky, or should be bulky.

The number of 'abs' you have is completely genetic. No amount of training or weight will give you any more.

From wikipedia's article on the "Rectus abdominis muscle" :

"The rectus is usually crossed by three fibrous bands linked by the tendinous inscriptions. While the "sixpack" is by far the most common configuration of the muscle bellies of the rectus, there exist rare anatomic variations which result in the appearance of eight ("eightpack"), ten, or—even rarer—asymmetrically arranged segments. All these variations are functionally equivalent."

This reminds me of the cover of Men's Health this month... with a glaring "8 Pack Abs Plan" plastered on the cover. Just made me shake my head. These guys are selling North American men a load of crap.

why is my comments "out of line"? i didn't degrade or make fun of his current size...i just think he could proifit more from added muscle mass than another row of ab muscles. Pumped up Pecs, shoulders and bi/triceps would make his current 4 pak abs look even better. icon_exclaim.gif

You were criticizing part of his body that are not even on topic because they do not conform to your personal taste. He already looks fine.

yes, i agree! never said he wasn't. way's a very appealing guy. many of us here would love to look like him, without the added 2 rows of abs or added muscle mass. icon_cool.gif

Sure, but no clue when to keep them to yourself. Keeps amazing me how many guys have absolutely no clue what they sound like from outside their own head. Whatever garbage falls out when they open their mouths is fine with them.

To the OP, I would do you just the way you are! icon_wink.gif

Wayaway - you're being too hard on yourself. I personally would kill to even have visible abs right now. But my body fat is too high, so they're hidden. But I'm hoping someday to get it down low enough that they're visible. And that'll be an awesome day when it happens.

Be happy with what you have sexy! Improve ONLY where YOU feel you want to. Make that 4 pack look hotter than 6 and 8 packs babe. You'll have guys after you like lost little puppies in no time (assuming you don't already)

Maybe someday when people aren't so judgmental and hateful you will be treated as a human being with dignity and respect.

thanks everyone haha all I wanted were opinions. I wasn't complaining in the LEAST. I am happy with myself and was only just curious with the anatomy of the six pack.

and well to be perfectly honest, I did kind of take this as a criticism. I was not looking for suggestions on how to bulk up and for what I NEED to be doing. that may be your taste to be honest it's mine too icon_cool.gif . it's whatever though no harm done.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidWhat creates the block or squares between the abdominal walls is called the tendinous inscription. Basically these blocks of muscle are attached to tendinous or tendon-like tissue in blocks. Here is a photo to see. These refer to the horizontal areas you can see in this photo I've linked for you to see here. the vertical line going down the middle is called linea alba. It appears that you only have one tendinous inscription which divides your six pack into a four pack. Nothing wrong with this. You are simply built this way and you have a great body.

Most people have 2 tendinous inscriptions which means they have three blocks of muscles divided by the linea alba which creates the six pack. And some people have 3 tendinous inscriptions which winds up giving them an eight pack. I have 3 tendinous inscriptions and the very top of my abs are so small they are the size of two of my fingers. This is when I'm super defined which has been...ahem......years ago. icon_smile.gif

Don't fret. You look great. This is how you were built. The reason the tendinous inscriptions exist is to create more strength within the abdominal wall in order to protect the internal organs. A solid sheath of muscle from your pelvis to you ribs and xiphoid process would not be as strong as how are bodies were created. The human body is miraculous.

    thanks for the post
