I'm pretty nervous posting this one, since it may easily incite a flame war (towards me or others). Nonetheless, I really wanted to see the honest opinions of others in a healthy discussion. (Ducks for cover)

Back when I was 18, I took class with a really attractive, artistic, and academic dude. We didn't get along particularly well. Regardless, when we apart of a group, I did what I had to to be in his (haha). I came across his facebook/myspace stuff awhile ago (using search via address book feature) to find that he was a Satanist. My personal feelings toward spiritual things is

Things of a spiritual nature can be a very sensitive subject, especially in the dating realm. It can easily complicate things if two people don't respect or mesh with each other..

If you're not a Satanist, would you date one? If someone told you that they were a Satanist, would you reconsider/stop dating them?

If you are a Satanist, do you find it particularly difficult to maintain a date/relationship with someone who isn't a Satanist? Do you keep it from people or do you openly share it?

    ---Further Edit
I do mean anything of a "supernaturally dark" nature, whether you consider that Satanism, Wicca, devil-worship, etc. I just mentioned Satanism here because that's what my classmate was and inspired the question.

Satanists are ridiculous. I mean I dont judge any other religion, but worshipping the antichrist!? come on, what do you expect to gain from that. Basically they are just desperate for attention

I once dated someone who I learned was a servant of the dark powers. At first I thought it was just some self-indulgent New Agey foible easily dismissable because he was actually quite hot. But he showed me a few things that proved it wasn't a pretense,
    I wouldn't do it again.

More than you bargained for, eh? icon_wink.gif

Excepting that situation, I would probably consider the "normal" type of Satanist to be too immature to date. That said, I've known several and they were all decent people, if a bit egotistical.

it would depend on the satanist, just as it would any other person. it would also depend on the TYPE of satanist. if you mean a member of the community founded by lavey, sure. although most of them are rather immature and egomaniacal (but that is what their belief system almost demands of them: they worship themselves as gods, which is great for empowerment but rather destabilizing in terms of accountability).

now, if you're talking about someone who is a member of the temple of set... no. no way. uhn uh. buh-bye.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidA lot of people who pursue cult like spiritual beliefs tend to have one thing in common. They are power hungry. Power hungry people dabbling with energy in this way tend to be very sensitive. If you were to piss a guy like this off and he has the potential to direct a lot of energy toward you with the intent to harm you may kick yourself later for trying to be so open minded to date him in the first place. icon_rolleyes.gif

In that sense, the argument is similar to dating someone that knows martial arts to a lethal standard... If you slip up, they can do you some real harm... but does that stop you from dating people that are stronger than you (whether it be spiritual or physical)?

Satanism has a lot of ritual and is similar to Voodoo as it has a lot to do with a perceived image. I've read the Satanic Bible and all the other books by Anton Z. LaVey and regard it as one of my favourite books; they really helped with my self esteem and confidence. If you look through all the "threatening" imagery on the surface of it, it has a lot to offer. Most of it is a reaction against a Christian oriented culture and its hypocritical doctrine.

I wouldn't date someone on the basis of religious beliefs, personally it's not an strong indicator of how I'd view them but having said that, a lot of Satanists are in it for the shock value, attention and to feel they belong to a group that doesn't look down upon social outcasts and I don't think I date a guy who's dressed in latex in Summer because he wants everyone to know he doesn't identify with anyone works 9-5 (and it was the most important thing to tell people about him). That was me aged 17-22 and it got me nowhere. People who are Satanic as a personal belief, I could date, but haven't met any.

You'll find a lot of bisexual and gay people in Satanism/ New Age/ Alternative subcultures too.

I think for Satanism to be a cult, it'd have to have one or more leaders that manipulates a group of members (and prevents them from leaving) and as a "religion", it's too spread out and has too many individual ideologies to have a cult status. A lot of people would grab a book on it and make their own minds about what they believe in and stand for, that's one of the core things you learn. But I'm sure there's more than a few groups with Satanic overtones high on power trips and more that aren't Satanic in nature.

II grew up culturally as a Catholic... I say culturally because my [immediate] family is not at all religious--though my family still goes to church every week.

Uber religious people are a huge turn-off in my book; I don't care if it's Catholicism, Wiccan, Protestantism, Satanism, Buddhism, or Pastafarianism... I do not want to surround myself with someone who believe in loads of irrational ideas.

Satanism doesn't turn me off as much as its silly beliefs. I've chatted with a self-described Satanist online before (gay.com)--he tried to convert me, and I went a long with it. Suffice to say my boner went away, and my horniess was replaced with sheer comedic pleasure. Sorry, the avatar of Lucifer did not appear in a blast of green smoke across my living room ceiling.

The satanist would have the same chances with me as any other religious person.... SLIM!

At least he'd have to be discreet and not openly religious, or very non-religious-acting. I don't like those flamboyant religious people.

You just described all religions in one form or another, (aka Fred Phelps, Church of Scientology, etc).

Faith, (aka religion) requires one to surrender a certain level of scientific acceptance of what we know of the universe in lieu of a trust in the ethereal (or a creator or creators.)

For me to date anyone that has a faith of any kind they also have to have an open mind to other possibilities. It can not be black and white, their faith or the highway attitude. If they are open to acceptance of you and not trying to 'convert' you, then they are a head of the game in terms of being reasonable and realizing the many possibilities of our universe.

Just as each one of us is unique and can be a very beautiful human being once we get to know them, we shouldn't try to change that human, for in doing so, we may loose the beauty that we once found in that person.

lol, probably not for the simple reason that a satanist eradicates his conscience, it's all about himself, and harming others is fine n dandy.

Under no circumstances would I date anyone who is a Satanist or someone who even dabbles in supernaturally dark things. If people want to do that it's their business, but I want no part of it.

    Well.... Honestly

I don't believe it would be my place to judge....

I mean I'd probably take a fair weather satanist of a fundy christian any day. What is the difference in teachings? I don't think satanism is likely to be any less likely to be true than that of any other religion
