I came across this photo essay (with some text) today.

Images of Afghanistan's bodybuilders as they compete for the ultimate prize.

Thanks for posting that. What a truly amazing story. That is a long way from what was going on in Afghanistan 10 years ago.

Okay is it just me..... or is there something off about the whole thing.....

I don't know what...maybe theirs just too much contrast or the angles are weird or something but it doesn't look right...maybe I'm just conditioned to looking at these type guys in USA/UK fitness mags

Also noticing a lot less proportionality in some of those guys compared to western counterparts... Good example, huge Pecs, Delts, Arms..... then nothing below the waist

The documentary "Afghan Muscles" is both interesting and inspiring; counterintuitive as it may be, bodybuilding has been very popular in Muslim countries for decades (remember "Pumping Iron?") and it rapidly became the national sport of empowerment for Afghan men after the Taliban lost power.

There's a reason they're so lean and disproportionate - they can't even afford eggs. What's engaging about this documentary is that despite the larger social issues, including the recent poisoning of young girls pursuing educations, you can still feel sorry for these athletes' struggle. Plus the protagonist's adorable.

You can see all seven parts on Youtube:

What a weird culture. They worship the male form but cover the female form from head to toe. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. Just seems a bit odd. Almost like the ancient Greeks.
