This is more than likely an uneducated observation but it seems to me that the average gay guy is "fitter" than your average straight guy.

There's no doubt that everybody wants the perfect physique and we even go as far as taking years off our life and sacrificing good health to look good (thermogens, artificial sweeteners, cortisol based workouts and low fat/carb/cal diets). So really despite the good qualities(goal orientation, "go getting" attitudes, self control, discipline, etc) of attaining a good physique it's really a display of an insecurity. Most of us go the extra mile beacause were not happy with our performance in sports or are uncomfortable with how we look.

So if my assumption that gays are fitter than our rug munching/breeding counterparts holds true,

is it because we are more self disciplined or because were just as insecure as the fat chick that goes bulimic to try to make her Jr. High cheer leading team?

I think there is some truth to the idea that gay guys hold higher value in the looks department. Some would say too much, but it sure is nice to have extra motivation to be fit..icon_smile.gif

I've never been insecure with the way I look. I even hung out at the nude beach, nude, when I was ~50 lbs overweight. The only reason I'm getting back in shape is purely sexual...nothing to do with self image...because it's proven science that in-shape guys will attract a broader range of people, hence making sex more accessible.

An added bonus is being able to pound harder, faster, and longer without getting winded. icon_wink.gif

In the U.S., outside the big urban gay centers, the majority of gays are just as obese as the rest.

Honestly though, most gay guys dont really have real lives.I mean work and going out, single,so you do have time to work out and have a great body.

Straight people, when they get older, have houses to pay, girlfriends, wives, mistresses, kids they want to see everyday and weekends to chill with the family.

Gay = great body applies for 25 to 30 + guys, but in college and university straight guys normally have better bodies.

That and the fact that we are superficial ass*oles

lol it's not the same for everyone, but the majority of gay people do focus on physical aspects of their lives (which is GREAT!), so...

It's standardized gay culture. Or rather cultures. Gay men, whether consciously or not, adhere to their markers as a way of forging identity. Ultimately they're pretty much defined by physical appearance, whether it's bear culture, circuit queen skinny boy culture, plasticized over shaved over tanned gym culture, burly natural gym culture, granola skinny greasy black hair indie gay culture....

I don't think its the same for straight couples at all.

It is WAY easier to compare looks with 2 guys, than it is with a guy and a girl.

Men are, in general, more visually oriented than women when it comes to who they date/sleep with. Therefore, gay men, like straight women, realize that their personal appearance has a lot to do with how successful they will be in dating, and moreso than is the case for straight men or lesbians. Trying to attract a man is more visual than trying to attract a woman, on average.

Furthermore, men, as a whole, are more interested in sex without commitment than women are. Therefore, a relationship between two men is more likely to either be casual or not-wholly-monogamous than a heterosexual relationship. As such, many gay men will be single for a greater percentage of their life than will straight men, and a substantial portion of gay men even in a relationship are still not truly off the market. That leads to a continued pressure to present the desired appearance.

Also, when the two members of a couple are of the same sex, it's easier to compare their relative levels of attractiveness. It's probably less common for two gay men to both think "My partner is much more attractive than I am" than it is for both members of a heterosexual pairing to think the same. Attractiveness is one of the traits for which there is a strong signal of assortative mating in humans.

I find that a lot of what MSUBionerd said rings true for me. On the other hand, I'm in Frankfurt Germany and I would say that the percentage of men who are fit and "looks conscious" overall has risen. If most of them are not gay (I'm trying an empirical study, but I still have an enormous number of people left to test), then I would say it is not a phenomenon exclusive to gay men at all.

We might just talk about it more. icon_biggrin.gif

This is true. Straight men in several non-US countries dress and behave in manner typically associated with gay males in the US. Standard straight guy culture where I grew up in Mexico entailed designer obsessions and overt grooming and styling. Oh and don't even get me started on the obsession of straight men in Mexico for pointy stylized shoes.

Actually my observation has been, more white straight men stay more fit than white gay men while black gay and black straight men tend to have an equal ratio of fitness which is usually more common than white and other races besides asians.

Could be that gay guys just dress better so they look better other than that no difference whatsoever from what I've seen over the decades.
