ftnip saidBecause the AZ law allows the cops to stop anyone on just "suspicion". I don't know about you but I am often running to work or other places and being stop by an asshole cop on a "suspicion" could cause me to miss a train and be late to where ever I need to be.
No, it's not simply "suspicion" as you state. The police can NOT ask a person for proof of citizenship / valid immigration status just because they "suspect" the person is here illegally. What you are stating is just a regurgitation of what the media, Al Sharpton, et al are saying, which is NOT what the law is.
And wow, you must have a black cloud over you or something. I've never been stopped by the police. What are you doing to warrant such treatment?
ftnip saidIf a person is being arrested the cops should check a person's identity, but if someone is just going about their day they shouldn't be hassled by the cops. A lot of "brown skinned" citizens will be needlessly harassed because of this law.
Read the law. It's very specific in stating that the police can't do that. It states (as I put in bold in the original post) that the subject needs to be engaged in "suspicious activity" and there needs to be "probable cause" both of which have well defined legal meanings. A person walking down the street to Baskin Robbins for an ice cream does not present suspicious activity or probable cause.
Any person who is found to be here illegally will have their case thrown out of court if the person was not engaged in suspicious activity that gave the arresting officer probable cause.
ftnip saidYou usually seem against gov't intrusion into people's lives. I am surprised that you support this. Or could it be you will take any chance to blame Obama for anything?
I'm all for enforcing the law.
To boil this down to its essence. The Federal government is failing to enforce its own immigration law as it pertains to people coming into states like AZ which share a border with Mexico. AZ is simply instructing police within the state of AZ to uphold the federal law.
I will also point out that Bush 41, Clinton and Bush 43 have failed miserably on this subject.
