    Hey guys,

I'm heading off to Panama soon for an internship for the summer. I'm really excited to be heading somewhere new but will be going to a country where I know nobody need to find an apartment and set up a life down there. Anyone have any tips for apartments/phones in Panama?

I'm also looking to do a lot of things on my time off. Love to do some diving, learn surfing if that is an option, go to parks and beaches, etc. If anyone has any advice on things to do in Panama I'd love to hear it.

Lucky for you, I'm half panamanian. I haven't been back in a few years though so I'm not sure how helpful I can be.

It sounds like you will be staying in the capital, Panama City. It's going to be ridiculously hot and humid everyday with tropical rain happening for an hour or two around noon 3 or 4 times a week. The city is crazy! Keep your wits about you, terrible drivers who have no regards for pedestrians. Let's see I heard the gay part of town is on Fourth of July street, I have never been but that's whAt I heard.

If you like scuba diving head out to Bocas del Toro, a little island on the carribean coast. I would definietly check out the nature preserve in the canal zone for the zip line canopy tour. My family always told me to stay away from the canal-Columbia eastern part of the country, due to the drug cartels and violent natives and poisonous rainforest. (no clue if it's true or not)

when you want to go shopping make a day trip of going to colon. It's a tax free city and a huge shipping port so many stores selling American name brand clothes at wholesale prices.

Now my favorite part, if you have time to spend $15 dollars for a 6 hour bus ride from the capital, then go to Boquete in Chiriqui. This is near the costa rica border and is about 8000 feet in elevation. You'll be surrounded by coffee plants, lots of Americans, and weather in cool 60s. The village is on the side of a dormat volcano that you can go visit and go inside of.

If I were you, I would go into the panama room on gay.com and ask for more tips. Good luck and don't forget to get vaccinated before you go!

I was there last year. There are lots of places that are perfectly safe in Panama and then there are places you'll want to avoid (Colon and the province bordering Colombia to name a couple). Unlike Costa Rica, very few people speak English- unless you'll be at a resort. Like Alex said, go to a travel clinic and get proper vaccinations and a prescription (or three if you'll be there a while) for traveler's diarrhea.

I can't help you with phones or apartments but my instinct would be to use some one professional for both and be aware of possible scams. Lastly, don't restrict your travel to Panama when you're there- its a small country and Tocumen flies to many exciting places nearby (e.g., Lima, Bogota, etc.). Good luck.

Ya I will be in the capital city for a while and then the plan is to charter a sailboat and sail to Cartagena in Colombia after the internship. I hear it's beautiful there too.
