Has any read a book called On the Down Low? I just started it, but I was wanted to see what you people thought about it.

Do you know what "down low" means? Do you know anyone that is on the down low? Ever been with someone or around someone you know is on the down low? What is your opinion about people that are on the down low?

I'm pretty sure checkered flannel was the one responsible for ruining everyone's live in the late 90's.

From what I've heard on Talk radio when the book came out it makes most married women/couples want to check their men for signs that he may be banging out/getting banged out by dudes.

I must admit I'm not surprised anymore... You wouldn't believe how many "straight" men want to have a boytoy on the side along with their family life.

There is a person I know of "Bob" who has had his boytoy for over a decade...and the person's wife and kids know about the boytoy.

The boytoy is actually so close with the wife that THEY go on vacations together...without Bob. The kids get along better with the boytoy then they do with Bob.

    And Bob is happy.

I wish we were on another forum, I'd dig up a thread from a couple years ago...this photographer (very good, btw) took a pic of a very cute androgynous guy wearing a red/black plaid flannel shirt and black denim jeans...on a farm. The entire thread was dedicated to him and the model, and we all determined that the gay flag is red/black flannel, with black denim. icon_lol.gif

Did he ruin their lives? Really?

I am having a hard time understanding what you are meaning by that. Honestly! icon_sad.gif

As far as I'm aware, if something is "on the down low", it's a secret. If you were telling someone something secret, you'd instruct them to keep it on the down low. At least, that's my understanding?

I've heard it used sometimes to describe closeted gays, or "outwardly straight" guys who have sex with men on the side.

Because it left many wives wondering if their husbands had secret lives, and it made gay men look like insecure, sex starved home wreckers.

I agree with what NyRuiz said. And it was one more negative thing that could be attached to black men. I know so many black women that were already complaining saying they couldn't find good black men that were educated, hard-working, and not on the down-low.

This is what I found online:

    down low [DL]:

    1. (secrecy) a state of secrecy. "I'll tell you, but keep it on the down low." Likely origin from turning volume controls "down low" on electronics devices to reduce the sound.

    2. (sexuality) the state of being a man who secretly sleeps with people other than his partner

    3. (sexuality) the state of being a man who secretly sleeps with other men

Oh, wow. I didn't think that book would cause so much turmoil in so many people about finding guys!

It actually did even though I know your comment was dripping with sarcasm. Hell my Mother started talking about that with her female friends. I was like, wtf?

And several of her women who were like that is why so many black women are dying. Men on the "downlow" are going out and fucking other men, and bringing HIV home to their unsuspecting girlfriends/wives.
