By a vote of 31-20, the Hawaii House today approved a civil unions bill just hours before the end of this year's legislative session.

The measure would give unmarried same-sex and heterosexual couples the same rights as married couples under state law. The bill passed the Senate in January by a vote of 18-7 and now goes to the governor for her consideration.

Mahalo to Blake Oshiro D-Aiea House Majority Leader and openly gay legislator for bringing it home!

It's a dead end that will go nowhere this time around. The Hawaii State Senate will likely not approve a similar bill, and the Governor will veto it in any case But nice that such things get this far.

I so much prefer the sound of "Civil Unions" as to this "gay marriage" thing. Civil Union has a sound of independence to it, where gay marriage just sounds like something copied.

This is great news, Hawaii is finally starting to move in the right direction in terms of equality for everyone. I am sure that the Mormons and other conservative religious groups will bitch and complain about this legislation but that is too damn bad. It is time for these right wingers to get their thinking out of the dark ages.
