I listen to Japanese folk music which is called Shimauta (Island Music). The vocals are very throaty and usually only accompanied by a three string shamisen, definitely an acquired taste. The two contemporary folk singers I listen are Kousuke Atari and Hajime Chitose.

Turin Brakes are a really good folk inspired English band and I love the Country-folk singer Shawn Colvin.

George Brassens (he's french, and if you look up the lyrics they're kinda funny)
    Randall Goodgame
    Leo Kottke
    Amos Lee
    Without Gravity (Icelandic, I think..)
    William Fitzsimmons
    The Weepies

-some of these I wouldn't consider to be "folk" but if you're looking on itunes, that's what it says. icon_rolleyes.gif
