[Edit: I am aware that christians in africa, asia etc fuckwittedly try to expel "demons" of gayness. The point is the involvement of religious ideology in the formation of political policy in a modern western society, in this case a woman with nutty ideas (which are not american, though prevalent there) is helping to write the social policy of what will probably be the next government. The way that religious ideas can then become government policy and law is the nutty idea which we don´t want in the UK]

You've got a lot of balls, blaming America for your own home grown nut case who decided to do this of her own free will.
Where she got the idea is completely irrelevant.

I like you, Lostboy, but it's a touch ridiculous to blame America for this schlock. You live on a continent that has had, to be polite, significant issues within living memory of playing nice with everyone in the community. So let's not point fingers, shall we?

America was founded in great part by European religious fanatics that were persecuted and/or kicked out of countries in Europe. Perhaps there are still some left there that you need to ship over. Unfortunately, we don't need any more. We have plenty. So you will just have to deal with them, just like we do. Good luck!

It is unfortunate that they just can't focus their religious fervor on helping the poor and addicted and leave us gay people alone.

It's certainly relevant to discuss her in the context of American evangelicalism, because she's a clear ideological descendent having founded New Frontier churches in the UK.

I think it's a very bad idea to mischaracterize Evangelicalism as the US Christianity because it's really still a minority (<25%) albeit a very vocal one. In fact it is the pluralism of Christian denominations that is more characteristic of US Christianity.

I also think it's a really terrible idea to unnecessarily associate the US with homophobia when these issues are still alive and well in Britain quite of their own accord.

Nutty? How many times do I have to post a Mr. Peanut image today? This is intolerable.

Some of you are a little dim , but I do admit to ellipsis.

New Frontiers International (NFI) was actually started in the UK, and as far as I know there is no direct link with the USA.

The nutty idea is that a person´s religion should play a role in forming a political party´s policy, which sadly IS an American phenomenon, rather than a British one. Also, in the UK, as far as I can see, homophobia is not Conservative christian fuelled homophobia for the simple reason that there are almost no Conservative christians in the UK (thank the goddess).

but no, I wasn´t blaming the USA...

Sorry, Lostboy, but I have to nip this in the bud.
The whole idiotic notion of "curing gay people" is not exclusively ours.
    Please don't blame us.

But apparently expected to win election to Parliament, and may hold a Cabinet position if the Conservatives form a government, which seems a possibility. Perhaps she'll become the Home Secretary.

though I do admit I was too cryptic... The issue "nutty idea" is the american style involvement of people´s conservative christian views in the formation of party policy. It has not played a serious role in recent UK politics (the famous "we don´t do God" under Blair), and now is a bad time to start again, especially when it´s demon possession of gays.

It's high time to give this piece of jingoism a rest. It was SIXTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

Were any of you part of that operation?.

Only people who get their "knowledge" of history from Hollywood believe that the USA "saved Europe".
To the rest of the word America was the johnny-come-lately who ran in for the final inning then pranced about shouting "YAY I WON THE GAME!! "

They profiteered for as long as they could then only later entered the war. To hear them tell it they think Patton commanded the whole operation - he was A commander under British command (and one prone to a LOT of ego-driven errors.) He was held in as much contempt as esteem by his real peers (although the US rank & file though the was great.) Many of his decisions did not withstand scrutiny.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen here, but it was going on thousands of years before the US existed. it is unfortunately a worldwide phenomena that was gone on way too long, but hardly an idea originated here.

Firstly, Winston Churchill defeated Hitler. I know this, for I watched Doctor Who a couple of weeks ago.

Secondly, we all know that the vast majority of Yanks are Jesus-freak nutjobs who seriously like their burgers; present company excluded. Let's just be honest and upfront about that one.

Finally, never trust a Tory. David Cameron on the cover of Attitude magazine? Purlease!

I think the conclusion is that where there are large groups of humans there will be idiotic delusional extremists. The only real difference between the different types of these assholes is the color of their skin and the metaphysical beliefs they use to justify their stupidity.
