A Newcomer Learns about Trolls

I recently started visiting RJ more often because I found value in many of the community forum posts. To me, community is what you put into it. So out of gratitude to others who shared value with me, I make an effort to share valuable insight and reasoned debate with others. Discussion of issues was lively and all RJ'rs seemed to be able to add value to the conversation or "debate the issue". And even if we didn't agree on a topic, at least we would respect the other person and not launch a personal attack. It seemed like such a perfect world. icon_biggrin.gif

Then it happened. Out of the blue, another RJ'r slammed me with some uncalled for personal attack about something that was lewd, vulgar, and off topic. What ensued was a veritable flame war of negative energy which certainly didn't make me feel good. icon_cry.gif

There have been a few incidents like this, and I observed and learned that this kind of sneak attack and thread disruption is caused by a type of low-life called a "troll". icon_eek.gif

I didn't give much more thought to the "troll" other than my view that this was just some kind of less than whole soul who probably didn't realize how much of an adolescent shit stirrer they were being.

Then, yesterday, I took the time to read more about "trolls" at www.encyclopediadramatica.com (a humorous wiki that discusses internet behavior, especially that which provides "lulz" or "laughs out loud").

OMG! What a fool and an easy mark I have been! icon_mad.gif

I learned that the troll is not just some immature soul, but a highly devolved toxic scum that feeds on the provoked responses of others. Stirring up shit and making other people unhappy is how the troll gets aroused enough to fap off to "goatse" and "tubgirl" while eating cold day-old chop suey. And, the troll does this with very sophisticated means.

I've realized that I've been way too nice to these morons and have fed them a veritable all-you-can stomach buffet. Not any more.

So, I humbly share my lessons learned with any others who may be newcomers to forums so that you might be able to quickly identify these psychic parasites and choose how you wish to deal with them.

How do you know if you've encountered a troll? They deliberately start inflammatory threads, post off-topic statements, or personally attack another member. That get's the shit started and the troll's microscopic loins twitching. They'll deliberately use poor spelling and grammar to invite correction. All this, just to pick a fight that will derail intelligent thought and debate by true members of the community.

How have I learned is best to dispense with a troll? Short of physically finding the person and murdering them (which would be much too merciful than allowing them to live a long miserable sub-existence), or a long drawn out telling-off, I've learned that the way to cause the deepest hurt is to ignore them and clue in others as to their presence. Exposure and irrelevance is a troll's greatest fear.

icon_exclaim.gif So, from here on I'm simply going to "out" the troll, click on "Ignore His Posts", block him via his profile, and urge others "Not to Feed the Trolls". This appears the best way to get them to just go away and "feed" elsewhere.

I hope all true community members got something of value from this.

And my message to any trolls that may be reading this:

I've had my fair share of trolls. Some are narcissistic; some just love to instigate political arguments. You just have to learn to ignore them - or block them - I've done a few times.

I have had the experience of being victimized by a troll on here so you get another hug from me too. I also agree with Ciarsolo. Trolls ravenously feed off the nice, and starve from indifference icon_biggrin.gif

Most of the people who post on the forums here are wonderful nice people. And some poke fun in a nice way. But trolls are everywhere. Note the popcorn on threads to find them!

    And yes. Ignore trolls. icon_smile.gif

Well, I guess I'm considered a troll here, blocked by about half the members. My offense is having strong anti-right-wing, anti-homophobic political views. I try to also provide useful advice on a wide array of topics.

But I'm still judged a troll. because I tackle right-wing homophobes head-on, without apologies. I suppose I should do like the others here, and chat about Lady Ga Ga, cheating BFs, and whether the guy above me is a bottom or a top. I don't, so that makes me a troll. icon_sad.gif

Trolls are like farts in the wind. You know they're going to stink, but then the scent is carried off in the wind.

Oh yes, and by design, u7. Note the way the ending...well, just leaves the troll hanging. It's kind of like depriving someone of orgasm after you've worked them up to a froth.

Most of the OP is for the benefit of other newcomers like myself who may not have yet figured out that cowards lurk.

You are absolutely right, Drew. There IS community here. That's why when I stopped by after a long hiatus, I decided to stay and contribute. And there is certainly a difference between "poking fun" and "personal attack". I giggle every time I see the popcorn lady.

Celticmusl posted a graphicConcern Troll is Concerned

Not sure if the posting of the graphic is to brand me as a "Concern troll", but if so...I'll wear the label. I like when I find positive community, and I am concerned enough to spend the time to contribute to keep a community vibrant, positive, and of value. Let my words be the evidence of any contribution (or not).

(Sigh) I am wordy. But even if it's a long read, Ciar, I hope it's a good read, and of value. It's kind of like "long, luxuriant sex". If it's good, it's fcuking mindblowing and worth every moment of extra time. (schlurp!) icon_twisted.gif

    Aloha and Be Well!
    Alan

P.S None of you have been ignored or blocked. Hugs!

Thanks for your insight. I remember in 2007 when I first posted on RJ and it mostly been a good experience.... but I too have had a couple of nasty experiences... the "yard jockey" thread certainly ranks.

The real negative trolls usually vanish fairly quickly and I do my best just to ignore it. But glad you are here and are a part of the community!

and as far as trolls are concerned, well:

    in my life
why do i give valuable time
to people who don't care if i live or die?

your posts, gamrican, open a space for all of the uncounted readers who may feel as you do, but choose not to post. trolls do seem to feed off of the nice, and indifference does seem to silence them. pick and choose your battles. remember sun tzu:

avoid the battles that you do not want
you can divide the ground and yet defend it
do not give the enemy anything to win.

munchingzombie shared with me the concept of john gabriel's greater internet fuckwad theory ( http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19). it is fully applicable here.

so post often, and post hard. be well.

Took you long enough to notice us, haha. btw check out http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/RealJock for some epic lulz.

Not all of us are bad, btw. Some of us only troll pervs, creepers, intolerant folk of various persuasions, other trolls, etc.

@ the OP: way to stereotype us all as the n00bs who flood forums with goatse - a lot of us have moved on from those juvenile tactics to more intense psychological methods.

RV is not a troll. He may occasionally be somewhat exasperating, but a troll, no.

    Pattison IS a troll.

    See the difference?
