Much as I despise Rekers, I'm not sure I see a legal basis for such a request of DOJ. There is a claim of "illicit" activities, but what are those? This is a private organization, that presumably can misspend its money as it likes. I don't think DOJ will touch this.

An online search of Florida vendors shows Rekers was paid roughly $120,000 and his co-hort Walter Schumm recieved an additional $36,000 in taxpayer money.

    The Evil of George Rekers

    [quote]
In 2008 Rekers testified as an expert witness to stop a gay couple from adopting a 4-year-old boy and his 4-month-old brother. It’s even worse than it sounds.

Just read judge Lederman's ruling on the adoption case (http://www.aclu.org/files/images/asset_upload_file16_37906.pdf) Was a really good read. Thanks, metta, for providing the link.

It is both amazing and appalling to see how just lucrative Rekers' professional hate-spewing is. The ruling states "The State of Florida has paid Dr. Rekers an advance retainer of $60,900 for work performed on this case to date" and further stipulates (in a footnote) "Dr. Rekers also testified that he may bill the State for additional time."

Interestingly, Rekers' testimony, despite the substantial price attached, did not hold any sway. The ruling states, "Dr. Rekers astounded the Court when he testified that he favors removal of any child from a homosexual household, even after placement in that household for ten years, in favor of a heterosexual household. To this Court’s further astonishment, the witness hypothesized that such a child would recover from the removal from his family of 10 years after one year in a heterosexual household. The Court finds this testimony to be contrary to science and decades of research in child development." And a bit later, "Dr. Rekers’ testimony was far from a neutral and unbiased recitation of the relevant scientific evidence. Dr. Rekers’ beliefs are motivated by his strong ideological and theological convictions that are not consistent with the science. Based on his testimony and demeanor at trial, the court can not consider his testimony to be credible nor worthy of forming the basis of public policy."

Rekers' testimony was thoroughly refuted by the testimony of actual professionals which proceeded his and the judge in this case did not consider him credible. And despite that, this hypocrite has been able to reap substantial financial rewards with his pseudo-science. It's truly disgusting.

As hateful (and pathetic) as Rekers and his ilk are, I doubt there are grounds to pursue criminal charges against him. Whether the professional associations (AMA, etc) that he belongs to and the state licensing boards that provide his professional certifications and license ought to consider pulling his memberships, certifications and licenses is a different story. In any case, I think it more than likely that Rekers's career as an expert witness spouting pseudo-science to support bigotry are over. However, there are others waiting to fill his shoes.

I agree, and that's the worst part.

metta8 saidFlorida Attorney General Bill McCollum Responds To Dr. George Rekers Scandal
    ...

I remind the readers that Bill McCollum was one of the infamous lynch mob of 13 Republican "managers" over the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. He was then, and still is now, a despicable man with blind and soulless political ambition that makes this "prosecutor" in deed more like a "persecutor".

And yes, as the linked page requests, fan the flames on this issue because Bill McCollum is running for Governor in Florida. It's May and although a political lifetime of over five months still hangs between now and the November 2010 election, let the taint of self-loathing-gay-ass-hypocrisy linger around Bill McCollum as long as possible.

Florida does not need that man in the Governor's mansion...EVER.
