i started learning mandarin, however i found out most people (in NYC anyway) speak cantonese, so that should be more useful, are they very different from eachother? mandarin seemed very easy to learn but the pronunciation was the hardest part

Mandarin is the official language, Cantonese is a dialect. I think many immigrants are from Hong Kong where they speak Cantonese. They sound rather similar but the tone is different. If you master Mandarin, you can pick up Cantonese rather easily. Then you can converse with me!
