Bridging was really popular when I wrestled in college. Did wonders for my back, but you need to be careful.

Furey can be controversial, but I'm a lot stronger and more agile from doing these. Your mileage may vary.

what part of your back? Is this preventative or because you have pain?

There are 4 main types of stretch: forward, back, side and twist and you also need to know that your hips and legs will effect your back. Be more specific and so will I.

BTW let me know if you can sit crosslegged on the floor like this

or are your knees up near your ears.

Lostboy had the right questions to ask... it depends on how you are looking to stretch your back - forward, backward, sidebending or twisting.

I have put together a huge library of tutorial videos, showing how to do yoga poses and stretch the body in certain ways.

You can go to my Yoga Poses page, Do Yoga With Me Yoga Poses, and under 'Body Part' choose 'Back'. It will show you all videos tutorials on how to stretch the back in all directions.

the basics of bridge and cobra pose will contract the back of the body; not stretch it ..

you can effectively take these poses (bridge/cobra) and stretch the back, but typically a forward fold of some sort will stretch your back. try squatting.

whatever you decide to do; incorporate a balanced action of medially rotating the adductors and sliding your coccyx forward toward your lower belly. both of these actions repel each other, so try to incorporate it into every excercise you do and you will never have back pain.

ps: i realize this is vague and non scientific.. speak with a qualified yoga instructor

I bought one of those back exercise stands where you hook your legs under pads and you can do back bends upward. I just hang downward there for about a minute and back feels 10 times better. I also use the Homedics Shiatsu massager in my office chair and my back then feels brand new.
