Quite awhile back, I was watching an old rerun of the "What's My Line?" panel show, where Joan Crawford was the mystery guest. After the panel had guessed who she was, the show's host (John Charles Daly) did a little interview, asking her what she was doing. And, she said that she was promoting some charity that was involved with adopting kids ! This originally aired in the 50's or early 60's.

I couldn't help but break up laughing, knowing about the future scandal over Christina and her book.

Cathy and Cindy - the two other adopted daughters dispute all of what older disinherited daughter Christina alleged in her 'book'. Friends and co-workers of Joan Crawford also came forward to deny all of the ugliness in the book. Crawford also paid all the bills of many of her lower paid co-workers when when they needed help, and she sponsored an entire hospital room at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital............and continued this sponsorship into the early 1960's after Cedars of Lebanon merged and became Cedars Sinai Med. Ctr.

Did Crawford beat her kids? I don't think so - based upon all the people who came forward in her defense..........people who were in the house; people who worked for her; people who went to school with the kids; teachers, etc. Even her longtime secretary / governess (the one who was named Carolann in the film) Betty Barker - said that in twenty something years, she never once saw anything but kindness toward the children - mixed with appropriate discipline. Mrs. Barker said Crawford did a whole lot for her eldest daughter Christina and got her job after job acting, but the girl was unappreciative and had problems associated with not achieving the fame and fortune her mother enjoyed. Again - I believe the other daughters and all the friends and associates over one mal-contented daughter.
