I work out 3x week and if the weather is bad use the treadmills 3x week too. But even with all that gym time I might see a guy use the showers maybe once a week. Nearly everyone just gets in their car and goes home... hot, stinky, sweaty. In the winter they will throw on a jacket and go home... hot, stinky, sweaty.

I don't get it. The showers are there, with plenty of hot water AND soap/gel. It is easy to clean up and get fresh, even if you are going straight home.

And if the guy DOES take a shower, he'll wrap himself in a towel (still dressed) and not take it off until he is safely inside the shower cubicle. When finished, he does it in reverse, wearing the towel back to his locker and then gets dressed while still wrapped in the towel.

We had physical education classes all the way through junior high and high school, and some in college too. Showers were normal and expected. Communal male nudity was no big thing.

Why are guys today so shy, and do "the towel dance" ?

They're not really shy. They're in the closet and just teasing you. At least that's how I like to think of it...makes for happy daydreams.

Yeah, I mentioned on another thread the same thing.
I’ve seen guys go so far as changing in the toilet stalls. Last week a guy did the towel dance, changing into swim trunks to shower in and my gym has private showers

I take the same perspective as paulflexes—I’m giving them a hard on and they don’t want me to see.

In dozens of years I"ve only seen that a handful of times at the most.. must be something in your towns drinking water. The few times I've seen guys do it they appeared to be east indian or muslim or something and I just figured they had some aversion to public nudity.

I think it's kind of a generational thing.
My age and older (and probably for a while after) had compulsory gym.
You got dressed in front of other dudes. The showers were communal.

In my junior high, the toilets didn't even have stalls,
so if you had to take a dump, it was in front of everyone....
and yeah, you did get heckled. Most us made a point not to have to go ;-)

I understand that younger guys, gym's optional. So they're not used to being naked in front of others. Like the other poster, there was one guy at my community college gym who took his stuff from the locker area into a toilet stall to change his shorts.....I so wanted to say, dude, I've seen dick before and I'm pretty sure you ain't got nothing special, but I didn't want to frighten the boy.

And as homosexuality's become more open.....straight boys are more aware that they could be the object of sexual desire, where once they were more oblivious.
(Though to burst many of their bubbles, usually we don't really want them nearly as much as they think we do.)

THANK YOU!!! why does every straight guy assume, no matter how ugly he may be, that every gay guy wants to do him!

Modesty. We are a nation that was founded by fundamentalist religious zealots. It will take some time for certain aspects of our culture to evolve.

Its common decency to hide your junk and your hairy ass, lol, no one needs/wants to see it, especially after you've been sweating it up out in the gym... this ain't Greece guys, deal with it.

The towel dance is a primal ritual performed by men in certain circumstances when they feel the need to be modest in front of members of the same sex. It was first discovered in a YMCA by an observant anthropologist. True fact.

Why is it that only GAY people see this as a problem and try to call others out on a topic that really has no merit whatsoever.

So the guys go home hot, sweaty and stinky after working out. So the fuck what? That's their business. Why should you care what they are doing in the gym? So guys choose to wear a towel to and from the shower and get dressed. Again that's their business and who cares? It's not a matter of guys being shy. That is so not the case and it seems gay men are the only ones who see it as that.

Here's a thought. Maybe if people went to the gym and did their business they wouldn't have to sit around and think about unnecessary topics like this.

Go the gym, do your business and leave. A simple "1, 2, 3" process. I know I'm too busy doing my work out and then cleaning up to even bother myself with why that guy two lockers from me isn't walking to the shower naked. Who cares?

I've got a better question. Why is it that every gay guy who goes to the gym and notices something like straight guys not walking around naked automatically think that straight guys are homophobic and have some delusional thought they think that you (the gay guy) wants them? Don't flatter yourselves. They aren't worried about you and they aren't thinking about you checking them out.

They are just going about their own business. It would help if some people tried that concept.

Ok so some of you guys are happy nudists, and that's great. But c'mon, the locker room at a regular gym isn't a nudist club. It seems every gym has its contingent, usually older guys, who pretty much just "hang out" in the locker room naked. That's not such a big deal, as everyone else just rolls their eyes and looks the other way, but there is a subset of those guys who leer at every hot thing that walks by and that's not cool. That kinda thing creates a lewd environment, not camaraderie, and I don't blame guys who wanna just get in and get out.

If i wasnt wierded out enough by that, he proceeds to go and shave in the nude, then he goes about the rest of his business just flailing his junk around and...lets be honest he was old, it was brown, it was lookin like it was 2 more "flails" from fallin off...

Please, oh please, do the towel dance.

In my college dorm, there are two showers, and yeah, every guy will get inside first, take his stuff off there, and just put it right outside on the handle. Yeah, and they go with clothes to the shower.

I leave my room just in my towel, take my towel off outside the shower, and get in.

Even if I had it, I wouldn't flaunt it. I'm a very shy person, and I find the locker room a little intimidating. I can count on one hand how many times I've been in the locker room at my gym, and it's always been just to pee mid-workout. I keep nothing in there. Even in the winter, I just run in from my car in my shorts and tee shirt. I know I'm weird. Oh well.

    This.

If somebody is worried about what other people do with their body, maybe he should find somebody who WANTS to be naked around him and get his fun that way.

The fact that I'm no longer shy in the change room blows my mind. It took me a long time just to build the courage, and get over my body issues to wear short sleeves in the summer. In the past I always wore long sleeves and layers of clothing, no matter how hot it was, to try and hide how skinny I was.

When I first started going to the gym, I was very shy too about changing around other guys. Now, I don't care. If you want to see my junk, it looks no different from yours. I'd be more embarrassed to do the towel dance, as I know for sure that I would end falling on my ass in front of everybody.icon_lol.gif
