I was curious if anyone on RJ decided to use their middle name as their "given name" rather than their first. I'm thinking of mixing it up and was wondering if anyone had any imput.

It's not that I dislike my first name or anything, but it's one of those things where you think, "Why not?"

    Unfortunately,

I don't have a middle name, so I have no choice.

My middle name is Emanuel, but in parts of Central Americs( Guatemala and El Salvador for sure) they shorten it to Meme...not "mee mee", more like "meh meh", so my family calls me Meme.

They started calling me Frank, which is my American name, but I just take offense to that. I feel as tho they are sounding like strangers than family, so I am like"no, my beloved family, it's Meme".

Since there were 7 Michaels in my 4th grade class, I went by my middle name (Todd) until I was a freshman in HS and no longer gave a fuck if other bitches had my name. icon_smile.gif

Messing with your name is a shameless vanity. You have the name you were given. The days of giving movie stars screen names is over.

Likewise, you're stuck with what your parents gave you. You have a first name, and a last name. Your middle name helps to identify you a little further if necessary in Western culture, it is not your first name. Such self-obsession is really not healthy.

I'll admit it's a shameless vanity but I will have to disagree with it bordering on self-obsession. It's similar to changing up your personal style. I find it a quirk.

Thanks everyone for the imput, though.

As a personal pet peeve of mine, I do find it a bit obsessive about oneself. My ex used his middle name because his first name was his Dad's. He was extremely self-fixated.

Oh yeah, and do we all know that if you're gay somehow being Steve is not acceptable, you need to be called Steven. Phil.....helz no......it's Phillip. Sebastian is of course Sebastian......is there any straight guys named Sebastian btw?

I know guys that have made up their first names, or used their middle name, or part of their middle name, or their confirmation name. I guess if one has a name that is hard to pronounce and wants to make it easier for everyone I actually appreciate that.

Mine's Wallace. I would use it, but then people would start calling me Wally and that was what we called my grandfather and he was a total tool. I was thinking of legally changing it to Buster or maybe Bubba after two of my favorite pets.

I grew up going by middle name and now whenever I am around my family that is what they call me. if my (full) first name is being used ... it means my mother either wants something or that I am in trouble.

My school somehow mistaken my middle name as my first name, so now everybody's calling me by my middle name, which is pretty.... weird.

If I moved to another country, I might consider altering my name to something more "local". It's anglicized anyway, so wouldn't make sense back in Europe, but there are a few different versions I could take depending on the language.
