So as I was sitting in the sauna watching some gay guys scope.... it dawned on me that when I'm at the gym I pretend to be straight. Not just so that the clueless straight people won't suspect or know, but even to fool the GSP/gaydar of other gay people.

I think there may be a bunch of contributing factors.

    1. I go to the U gym, same gym I went to 20 years ago when I was completely closeted and not out to anyone ("it's just a phase, It'll pass...").
I could be falling back into that role.

    2. I'm now old enough to be the father of many of the guys at this gym.
I don't want to be seen as the "dirty old man".

    3. I'm in a monogamous LTR. I'm not looking to cruise or pick up anyone.
Don't want anyone to get the wrong idea.

    4. Internalized homophobia 1: I don't want to be grouped with the sauna/shower queens (you know, the ones that are there when you start your workout... and still there when you hit the showers 2 hours later).

    5. Internalized homophobia 2: I think I can pass as straight and try to, as if that proves anything.

    6. Someone is kind enough to leave a NY Times in the sauna before I get there, and I really am interested in reading it.

    7. Get over yourself, Mary. Like anyone at the gym cares if I'm gay or not?

    What do you think?
Is any of this familiar to you?

If I go to a gym. I act at dingy as a ding dong and twinkly as a twink!

That way, I am sure to be fucked extra hard in the shower, sauna, pool or in the parking lot by a very aggressive over juiced testosterone laden MAN!

    LOL

maybe you should stay out of the sauna? Sounds like you enjoy going in there. If you were in my gym and I saw you going in the sauna--I'd probably guess that you were not "straight"

I play naive and aloof. No one bothers you that way.

Actually, I may come off as a straight guy at my gym, not really intentional though. And I still have my long, awkward eye-contact moments with several of the guys at the gym, so I'm getting through to a couple of them.

I think you're choice of words was poor and you probably meant that when you go to the gym, you control your urges, unlike some who think it's a 'smorgasbord for homos'. And then come on the internet and post bitching about how the gym has made it a rule that you can't go without a towel even in the sauna...and wonder why.

And I thought I could be an analyst! I understand where you are coming from, but for me its all about what I'm there to do and thats to work out. I don't do the sauna, so I don't have the background. I wave and say hello to clients, to those who are friendly and I go on about my business. I don't care who's gay and who's straight. I notice
nice looking men.... but the focus is my workout routine.. then go home.

My gym doesn't have a sauna. I just go in and work out. I do notice the attractive and often well built guys, but beyond that I don't do anything 'gay'.

I do understand where you are coming from in this, honestly I do, in the gym I'm going to for now *changing to a new gym that is opening in a few months* for a few reasons really I do, do a few of the things.

    1. The guys I got to know had no idea I was gay until a few weeks of gym chatting between sets and or my assisting them in working out, form, posture, etc.

    2. Kingston may seem like its very gay friendly but its just an image really, when you get to know the straight people they tend to look down on gay people, then they find out your gay and for a few days it gets a little ackward on their part, you know them try to explain they were only "teasing" and meant nothing by what they said before they knew you liked cock and ass and not in that order.

    3. There are more then a few old trolls in the gym I go to and they LOVE and I mean LOVE to stare at the college and university students and being seen as an openly gay man and in a relationship, they tend to think your going to stare at them too.

    4. I've openly kissed my partner in the gym more then a few times, not for the shock factor but because I wanted to kiss him and that has caused a few heads to stare and a few of the muscle queens to try and act like bullies around us.

    5. I've more then bumped heads with guys at the gym over number 4 and trust me they avoid me now but still give me nasty looks cause my "cock" is bigger then theirs, well ego really, that and I hate when they try the I'm better then you, look at what I can lift, then you show them what you can really lift and they run with their tails between their legs.

SO needless to say caesarea4 I know where you are coming from, trust me your not alone.

Also I saw your photos of the Gay Games, by chance are you going to Cologne this year?

I don't "play" straight, I just do me. However, after meeting gay guys at or from the gym, they always say the same thing, "I thought you were straight!"

I understand u and i do the same.
I don`t have gay friends, all my friends are str8 so when i`m with them i play the girls fucker caracter, but it is something natural to me, it`s not something forced, something that i say to myself ''today ` must pretend i`m the most masculine man on earth''.

I think some guys that u in the future may have as friends if some them know you`re gay today they will probably avoid to stay, work out, or enjoy the sauna with u.[c`mon, it happens]

But tell me one thing, is it so easy to notice you`re gay?

It's because you don't act in a stereotypically gay way and gay men look for that in other men in order to determine if they like gay or not. Gotta get with the program.

What do I think? I think you shouldn't have posted this topic. Masochistic much, or are you really trying to admit that you're a dirty old man who likes to stalk the sauna?

I don't know whether I should to laugh at you or be offended.

This is a ridiculous topic. OP, there's no way in hell you can come across as being straight anywhere, especially in a fitness facility.

Give up that ghost and just be a man.

    Jeeze ...

At least you are honest with yourself. Growth comes with self awareness.

Just be yourself. Let go and do whatever you feel like doing. Fuck what others think. Fuck what your inner critic thinks. Go where you wanna go, do what you wanna do.

It sounds like you're hyper-analytical, like me. I found myself so stifled by introspection sometimes. I had to let myself enjoy the moment, and turn my inner analyst off.
