I always see guys in the gym with gallon jugs of water. I know water is very important, but why do they have to drink so much.

bc they are most likely taking creatine, and need to retain water for a 'bigger' appearance. And most people don't get the 'suggested/required' amount each day.

Building molecules, breaking down molecules, and even energy production are all reliant on water, or the subunits of water.

Of course you can drink too much water, afterall all the body is all about balance and homeostasis

But in the end, water is very good for you. You can go without food, but without water you will die.

Your blood would become thick and not flow properly, nutrients would not be delivered throughout your body properly.

Water is so important to your body, that your body doesn't want to give it up. Yes, we pea often, but the percentage of water we lose in urine is nothing compared to the amount of water that the body retains purposely maintains through hormonal regulation.

so they're probably just drinking water to be healthy. And also if they are taking supplements, it doesn't hurt to drink more fluids to prevent dehydration.

A Gallon jug at the gym might be overkill.. but it is important to drink a lot of water. Personally.. if I drink a lot of water at the gym I get cramps, and stitches in my side. Shit like that.. So I usually just have a few mouthfuls throughout my workout. I feel it's best to pre-hydrate. Getting the water into your body before your body actually needs it.

I'm hardly an expert on the matter. I just do what makes me feel the best.

I don't carry the gallon jug with me to the gym, but I do fill one up every morning so I'm sure I drink one gallon every day--if I do glasses I just lose track.

Well that is part of the truth and it is no joke. Water does help the muscles to grow and that is why if you are using a creatine supplement you are required to drink alot of water in order to keep the muscles hydrated since that supplement needs alot of water inorder to build the muscles. I do drink alot of water myself and it is very important to keep my body hydrated especially living in a tropical climate.

Fun biochemistry fact: making protein chains from amino acids actually produces water. The more you know...

(Not that that's going to be relevant over the course of a workout - it's a tiny amount compared to what you sweat, and not a lot of protein synthesis is probably going on when while you're working out.)

Most gyms don't let you carry around a pitcher of beer. Nazis. Water is the obvious alternative.

How ironic that this should appear just above the 'urinating outdoors' thread...

Your body needs a lot of it. Water is not just a way to flush out toxins; if you have more water in your body you will generally feel healthier and fitter. This itself will discourage any tendency to gorge. The best thing about water is that is has no calories at all.

There may be numerous other reason why they have gallon jugs:
    1. you dont have to keep running to the fountain to get water
    2. some may have some additives in there (glutamine, etc) or they may be creatine loading... most loading periods require 128 oz of water [1 gallon (minimum)]
    3. it may be a macho thing to walk around with a huge gallon of water.

if you work out and do not drink water at all during your workout, you can dehydrate easily, and that does not feel good! The extra water also gorges your muscles making you look all "swole" icon_biggrin.gif

I think I am going to stop at a truck stop and get one of those ridiculous coffee cup jug looking things and take that with me to the gym.
and why the F can't we drink beer in the gym!
