    Rant follows:

Just went to a bar ffor the first time in 9 months and they are worse than I remember. Give me somewhere where you can actually hear a fucking word that people say to you and have a conversation without SCREAMING to see if they are nice people who you connect with. Or give me a sex club where you just slap someone´s ass and see if they follow you. But bars are a craptastic nothing inbetween. Bad music, smoke, noise, too crowded, absolute fucking waste of an evening (well not totally: spent some time with housemate, but didn´t enjoy the bar)

I had the opposite experience. Something to be said for jumping around and screaming like a fool.

Everyone knows bars are zoos for observing primate mating rituals. Sounds like somebody forgot their field glasses and journal.

Oh...not me. I love to go, dance and have fun. If someone wants to chat I say...later when I am finished dancing....

We have no smoking in our clubs, out side patio's for conversation and the parking lot to fuck in if you must.....

I go...dance...go home alone...It's not a hook up spot for me, just a place to go to get away!

Agreed. Places with loud music are mainly for dancing. If you want to have a conversation, it's better to go to a coffee shop or social / sporting event.

I agree with this 100%! Always just go to the club to dance my ass off. It's actually annoying when someone tries to have a conversation with you on the dance floor. Just dance! Damn! It's not complicated. Conversation is for on the patio where the smokers are or in some secluded dark corner ;b If I'm ever looking for something serious. . . I think the last place I would hold any expectations would be a bar or club lol. Most bars around here contain an, uh, "older" crowd, so I avoid them anyway icon_razz.gif

COFFEE SHOPS sure do bring the animal out in a man right...the idea is to show on the dance floor a few moves that might be seductive...right? I just read how for men and women...to much intellect, analytical and nerdy ways can be a turn off...

Oh...this was not directed towards you season in any way. Your already fuckable!! ha!

LOL, Myst. Always such a gentleman :-) I've seen you dance and you're amazing! I agree that intelligent guys don't get very far in the bar scene. They don't say "ignorance is bliss" for nothing...

i don't know that i've ever been in a quiet bar, gay or straight. either there is a band playing or the house music is turned up to stun.

a bar is a place you go to party. party = loud music.

if you were looking for an enchanting evening where you could have a conversation about life, you went to the wrong place.

It's all what you make of it. I don't like that the music is so loud, maybe a few decibels lower, but once I'm drunk I don't usually care, and just have a wonderful time!

I've never been to a club but i have been to a bar or two, and the couple I have been to had low music so conversation was easy going.

Back in the 80's and 90's the music (Whitney/Mel & Kim/Samantha Fox) was just as bad in gay clubs, but my friends and I endured the experience just to see what after hours was happening. We also filled up on cheaper drinks at the regular clubs so we would have something in us before having to pay the illegal premium price at the after hours. I miss those old days when there was always incredible after hours to choose from. The deep house/electronic bliss, way too many bodies in a deafening loud, sweaty, steamy, smoked-choked warehouse or upstairs loft from which you knew you would never escape with your life if the place caught fire, and the drive home that required sunglasses in the bright morning sun. Those were the days. They seem to be a lot more rare in these times. What is wrong with you kids, today? You don't know what you're missing.

Depends on the area you live too. Bars usually are quieter unless that's the only gay place in the area. Then it tends to be a mix of club and bar.

I guess the larger question is whether there are any gay bars that do the following:

    a) Play music that something other than a bubblegum-snapping tweenage girl would like

    b) Aren't dank holes with all the olfactory charm of a gym bag

    c) Have some interesting drinks (dare I ask for cocktail revival fare?), instead of "$2 Well Drink!" nights

    d) Have space that encourages conversation, and finally

    e) Still have attractive men present

I feel like the current prototypical gay bar is oriented around one thing, which is making communication as difficult as possible, and otherwise facilitating the prospect of a sexual encounter. It's practically designed so that you can find someone to go home with without ever figuring out if they're a tolerable human being.

I don't even pretend to understand the people who go to these places "just to dance". I'm not criticizing, just saying I have the same prospects of understanding that thought process as I do of communicating with dolphins. Much the same as I'm sure they think I'm odd for wanting to socialize by talking at a bar - diff'rent strokes. I want a place I like to go to, too.

Addendum: For further color, I absolutely hate the word 'party' used as a verb. I will likely not understand or appreciate the perspective of anyone who can use that word without irony.
