Inguinal Hernia repair on both left and right sides yesterday. Procrastination is my middle name - cause I waited too long! Wish I could have waited even longer 'cause this sucks!

First surgery of any kind so I read and reread all the "hernia" forums posted over the last few years. Best advice ... wear a jock. I've got lowing hanging nuts to begin with...but add swelling and OMG! This is like an unskilled dom trying CBT for the first time!!

Laying low, slowly walking the hall and watching the clock for the next pain pill.

On a side note...I am so used to being self sufficient and just handling shit on my own. Just bite a stick and push through it. I am leaning on Scott for help and he isn't pulling away...last night I broke down trying to get into bed. He just locked eyes with me and kept saying "I'm here ... just breathe". He held me and rubbed my head until I fell asleep...when I woke up he was there watching over me, pain killer and water waiting.

Words escape me...I can not express what I feel for this man.

I think you're a bit of a drama queen, but it's a nice story of love. Looks like you got a great man there.

The physical pain sucks - but it's there for a reason: to slow you down and stop you from doing anything to interfere with your healing.

The emotional discomfort of letting somebody else look after you is where the real action is. It's something a lot of us could practice some more.

On both counts: take it easy and try to relax. You'll come through it better off - physically and emotionally.

oh bru, you've never had your abdominal wall cut through if you think he's being a drama queen... walking wasnt an issue for me, but sitting up is awful... best bet is changing the way you would naturally do it, i just switched sides, but having both sides done is hell.

Just make sure to take it super easy the first couple days. I'd picked up a jock strap for extra curricular activities a few months before I had mine done, and I was glad it was around... aside from keeping the boys nice and still the band helped keep pressure on my abs which felt like bliss.

Disagree. This surgery sucks. It's horribly painful to recover from, because you can't flex anything in your core without getting severe stabbing pains. I was nearly in tears the first couple days of my recovery whenever I had to get up and walk.

It's different for everybody. In my case it was unpleasant, but not a nightmare. I didn't have to take anything stronger than tylenol and was able to get up and walk on day one (a good thing because my bedroom is on the 3rd floor). On day two I took a 40-minute walk -- the surgeon's advice was the sooner you're active the sooner you'll heal.
But the OP's lucky to have such a partner.

Hope you heal quickly from it. Only had one side done several years back, can't imagine what both sides must feel like.

I've never had hernia surgery, but I did have a belt-line-lipectomy. Basically cut all the way around, and removed 9lbs of flesh and other stuff from my midsection and then pulled me tighter than human lampshade. Ed Gein ( the psychopath) would have been proud of my surgeons technique! LOL.

The pain was excruciating for the first few days. But I had to get up and walk and keep the circulation going.

Get better soon! And yes, congrats on having someone there for you!

Yeah, this is not drama. That surgery was brutal. I only did one side at a time. But I was down for at least a week. Well, not down. But laughing, coughing or sneezing resulted in agony. Come to think of it, pooping was excruciating too.

Tip: drink lots of prune juice. I despise the stuff. But it helped. Seriously.

    Hang in there.
