...some guys have a bit more modesty than others.....I don't understand it either.....Its a men's locker room....guys change clothes and get showers and whatever else....nudity is a natural part of life and lime in the gym...... and guess what we all have genitals... get over it!

Actually I do remember when I was VERY bashful about nudity, but several surgeries and stays in the hospital, with IV's and catheters and enemas and any other number of procedures certainly does a number on your need for "modesty"....not to mention your dignity...LOL! I am pretty much a nudist now! LOL!

    Some guys are naturally shy.

I use to be one of those shy guys until I joined the military. During basic training, I saw so much cock and ass it wasn't even funny so I just kind of got over it.

Before that, I'd definitely wear a towel or something, or even go as far as to change in a stall because I use to be very uncomfortable with it.

I guess if anything, different people have different comfort zones.

Wether its because they think guys might stare at them, or they are self concious about their body, or whatever.

    People like to be comfortable.

So guys wear towels in the locker room while changing because it makes them comfortable.

They are maladjusted. We just had this virtually identical thread here, but as it got a bit long, and paradox gave some links, might as well run this one for a while.

Back in the 1980s I belonged to a YMCA Men's Health Club (requiring additional membership fees over the ordinary facility, giving you an exclusive locker room, laundry & towel service, mens sauna, steam room & hot tub, tanning rooms, etc.

And there was a guy who always wore a towel the whole time he was in the open gang shower. He didn't even try to wash his junk, just his exposed skin. Then he'd step into the hot tub still wearing the towel, possibly retaining some soap, despite a large and clear sign on the wall over the tub that said it had to be used in the nude, as all the rest of us did. Needless to say, with the foaming water jets surging he spent most of his time struggling to keep his towel from coming off and floating to the surface.

One day I overheard another guy in the locker area commenting about this strange behavior, and wondering why he was allowed to violate the rules. Another voice explained that this guy was a well-known local Baptist minister, and it was assumed his conservative religious beliefs considered nudity to be a sin, even in a mens locker room. Therefore no one would challenge him on it, and the Y management would take no action to enforce the rules in his case.

Well, I had already formed my own theory, since my gaydar pegged on this guy, and I think he was afraid of showing a stiffie around the naked guys. Why else would he pay extra money for a special membership, only to be surrounded by something he thought was sinful?

Jay, just be glad that the guys don't form a circle around you and start force sucking you and abusing you. If I was around you, who knows what might happen! icon_lol.gif

I wouldn't term mine a "monster" but it is somewhat bigger than average. And so I'd get some glances, which would embarrass me, because I was afraid they'd assume I was semi-hard. And when I was younger getting a hardon in the locker, shower, sauna or nude pool was a sign you might be queer, and get you kicked out of there in disgrace. (Nowadays guys seem less concerned about getting public wood, despite this towel thing going on)

But I never get hit on, maybe because I'm too dense to realize it, or am simply too unattractive. Or else, like the other societal changes above that I've seen over my lifetime, guys in my day didn't hit on each other like they do today, but by now I'm too old for anyone to bother doing that with me, hence I've never experienced it then or now.

All I can say is that it's something that's alien to me, and wasn't aware this conduct is so common & widespread that guys have to wear towels at all times to avoid it, and to skip taking showers.

Complicating things in my case is that I AM gay, and DO like to see guys naked. But I was raised in an era when staring was strictly taboo and forbidden, and so I trained myself to avert my eyes (being blind w/o my eyeglasses helped a great deal, too). I also trained my mind to focus on other thoughts, to do a kind of mental "cold water treatment" when I felt things getting out of control.

But what helped me feel really relaxed in a locker room was coming out gay. Once I could have guys in my bed, I could ignore them in the public shower. Or when I wanted that experience, too, I could visit a gay bathhouse or resort, and have all the guilt-free and legal fun I want. That made the guys in the straight locker room of little interest to me, and I don't even feel my dick getting hard there anymore.

Guys by nature are very competitive. And, truth be told, we all want to see how we measure up. I really don't get the whole insecurity thing. I agree with you. We're all men. So, whether you're big or small, it is what it is!

Most of us are not Lou Ferrigno. So, does that mean that we don't take off our shirt for fear that someone might see our chest???

I think guys just need to Man Up.

I agree with what some others have mentioned - if i feel i am being watched (and don't want to be), i will use a towel while putting on underwear.

It's a sign of insecurity. I could care less if you cover yourself with a burqa to change into your underwear. Just be comfortable and not judge others that don't have any modesty issue. Nothing will get my attention whether you have a foot long schlong or an angry inch if you have an ill-fitting underwear on ... icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

    Guys -- seriously, this is a non-issue.

    Cheers

OK, but WHY? Men never used to be that way, you know, so why the change in attitude & behavior? In contrast to what you see today, being shy and modest among other males was previously considered unmanly, the exclusive behavior of women, and maybe those "other" kind of men.

Indeed, the rare shy man or boy in the US was berated with things like "Don't act like a girl!" "Don't be a sissy!" and "What are you hiding? We've all got the same equipment." (Or the "same stuff," or that we all look the same, and a dozen other similar taunts)

As for some comments here that this be a non-issue here, I agree, in the sense that what I'm describing once WAS a non-issue in locker rooms, which is my very point. It SHOULD be a non-issue, but a non-issue in the reality of the locker room itself as it once existed, not as something we don't want to discuss online.

I was in my underwear in the locker room at the YMCA on Saturday at closing time and a female attendant (without calling out in advance) walked into the locker room to see me. Red and embarassed, she apologized and ran out.

Unphased, I told her and a laughing manager on my way out that I've been seen by many in my underwear (it started early as a teenager... I didn't care if my female friends saw me that way, much to my mother's objections).

I really don't give the slightest shit about it......

    Man up indeed..
having attended all boy schools all my life nudity is nothing new, i mean we'd have biggest dick contests in the shower as well as who could cum without jerking off contests,[ it was quite an education, and being singled out for having such a huge dick in comparison to my height made me popular..lol ]
But i really hate it when people continue to make advances after i tell them indirectly that i'm not interested...
