1980s Madonna FTW, but Mariah after 2000 FTW. Both of them sucked in the 90s (except Madonna's "Erotica" album was amazing).

    Madonna, very easily.

Mariah's awful. Ridiculous songwriter (with a couple of exceptions). Horrific performer. Completely vapid and shallow individual.

I agree, the 80's was Madonna's decade whereas the 90's was Mariah's. They are both great artists and keep their fans attention in different ways. I go with MC though, I've always been a fan and I think she still puts out great music. I read somewhere she's back in the studio and anticipates a new single out toward the end of the year, early '11.

Mariah for me. I'm a sucker for oversinging divas! I do love Madonna too.

I actually disagree with first reply about Mariah sucking in the 90's...i guess everyone has different tastes.

I mean just listen to Hero, Whenever You Call, My All, Honey, Dreamlover, Vision of Love. These are legendary songs!

I love both, but again, Mariah is my love icon_smile.gif

I loved the first half of each of their careers. They have both faltered big time lately though...blah. Mariah's first three CD's were amazing then her voice seemed to give out. Madonna's early music cannot be topped as far as dance/pop goes..I mean, play an early-career Madonna song and ANY dance floor will fill up in seconds. icon_lol.gif

    Neither.

I mean if I was forced to chose just one at gun point, Madonna. Mariah is like a cat being drowned in a bucket, but Madonna is an old white lady trying desperately to hold onto her youth (she really needs to stop trying to rap). So neither.

    How about Little Boots.

NO ONE can top Mariah Carey!

"Cant Take That Away" Live performance..... makes my hair stand up on end.

2005 Grammy Performance - Amazing... wait for the end... from 3:30 onwards her vocals are just spectacular and she really gives the performance 120%

    Tribute to Patti LaBelle (Incredible)

Live feed from her mic at 1998 Divas Live Performance.... her vocals are totally raw and just incredible!

    Love you Mariah!!!!! icon_smile.gif

I've never been a huge fan of either of them so I'm gonna pick neither. Mariah once was good but she can't sing like she use too and Madonna she's a Pop Icon of course but she had her time and I wasn't even living back when she first came out on the scene.

When I think of these 2 I think of cassette tapes lol.

Hmm...I do not find Mariah boring AT ALL. She has some great dance-y, fun music and just out of this world good music - even today.

Starlite saidI have to go with Madanna...Madanna seems more like a 'trend setter' to me...she helped set trends that others, like Mariah Carey, benefited from...

Madannas like an ocean, Mariah,C is like a wave in that ocean...

Well Mariah set the trend for R&B artists. Before her, NO ONE did pop songs with R&B take/collaborate with rappers. She paved the way for MANY artists such as Brandy, Beyonce, Rihanna, etc.

I have Mariah on my Ipod, cause some songs I do like, but I find her boring, cause she does the same thing over and over. Madonna just has that spice that I like about her and her music so she is my fave. Plus Madonna did rule the 90's too people, remember 'secret' 'take a bow' 'deeper and deeper' 'ray of light' etc.

I think that's like comparing Brittney (Madonna) to Christina (Mariah). One clearly has a phenomenal voice and the other is just OK, but is able to top the other as an overall entertainer. If you're talking about singing, Mariah is the better singer no question, but I think Madonna is better of the two when it comes to performing and that's why she'll always be bigger than Mariah.

I like and respect both artists, but Mariah's catalog just resonates with me more. Her music shows sensitivity and I think she's hilarious. Madonna is just a bit too stoic for me.

    - Hero
    - Always Be My Baby
    - Forever
    - I'm That Chick
    - We Belong Together

Plus, the lyrics from her new album are hysterical. I know it was a commercial failure, but it's one of my favorite albums of the last few years. It's just fun.

Haha as much as I want to agree with you, check your facts first. Janet did her thang back in '89 with Alright off her Rhythm Nation album. It featured guest rapped Heavy D. Both Janet and Mariah paved the way for artists today. Though Janet essentially created the prototype for today's pop/r&b/dance artist. It hasn't changed one bit. But that's a completely separate discussion...

    madonna

but mariah notice all of her songs are breathy (all singers get lower voices as you age) she cant reach her whistles anymore. Google Georgia Brown

    she has the guiness book

madonna has staying power. mariah (who i a have known for years is just using a lot of vocals already recorded

HERE IS GEORGIA BROWN...LISTEN TO THESE HIGH NOTES. BY THE WAY MARIAH HATES HER

SHE HAS THE HIGHEST VOCAL RANGE ON THE PLANET

Georgia Brown's whistle notes may be higher but they certainly dont sound nice.... Mariah's actually sound controlled and have a nice pitch and tone to them. GB sounds like.... a little girl squealing. icon_sad.gif

And whoever said Mariah can't reach her whistle notes anymore.... wrong. Saw her in concert... Live... she still can. And its amazing.

NO contest, it's Madonna. Now, she isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination. There are plenty of her songs that I can't stand, but there's usually a song or two or three that I've liked on each of her albums, and have continued to enjoy.

Mariah is talented. She does have a great voice. But it's what she chooses to do with it that works my last nerve. She's like a hip Celine Dion. The vocal "tricks," the endless runs, overpowering a song unnecessarily, just ruins it for me. If she would rein it in a bit, show more subtlety, I'd enjoy her a LOT more. Still, I'm glad she made it through the rough patch in her life from a few years ago. I think she still has potential, but I'm just not on her bandwagon yet.
