    Start with the beginning. The further back you go, the more experimental it gets. If you want an album recommendation, I personally think "Feels" from 2005 is the greatest album of all time -- but you might not like it right away. I'd probably start with Merriweather Post Pavilion. For those who want singles, follow the links below:

    2009: Merriweather Post Pavilion / Fall Be Kind era

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zol2MJf6XNE
    "My Girls"
    This is their most universally liked song. However, this was not the song I got into them by.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGQjyGT1-mc
    "Brother Sport"
    I think a lot of people love this song. I love the song to, but I mean I love all their songs. I personally think this song is rather inaccessible, but hey, they made it a single so.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxhaRgJUMl8
    "Summertime Clothes"
    Can't get over how summery this song is

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYEAflCO4Eo
    "In The Flowers"
    Its like a psychedelic experience with every listen

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NZlXwPb_JPM
    "Bluish"
    A song that oozes love (by the way, the image in that video is the album artwork. its not actually moving -- its just an optical illusion)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAMPw7zKrgc
    alternatively:
    http://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/11644-what-would-i-want-sky/
    (you can play it beneath the review in the lala player)
    "What Would I Want? Sky"
    The youtube is a really shitty quality version of the song, I recommend you google search a bit for it. But anyways, this is the first song that ever samples The Grateful Dead with said band's approval.

    ~~~
    2007 - 2008: Strawberry Jam / Water Curses Era
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxvGHQHiY70
    "Peacebone"
    This is the song that got me into the band.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztvr09J7KK4
    "Fireworks"
    A lot of people say this is their favorite song of all time.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7GZLRxVzvg
    "Water Curses"
    <3 this song
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TswM9XcGd7g
    "For Reverend Green"
    Fucking love this song.
    ~~~

    2005: Feels era:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqvBoFpgXQA
    "Grass"
    This song is actually in my profile

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXfwc0RDHBQ
    "Did You See The Words?"
    one of the best album openers ever

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jj-0vMrZJbo
    "Banshee Beat"
    My favorite song of all time

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyJjihseiio
    "The Purple Bottle"
    My best friend got into the band through this song

    ~~~
    2004: Sung Tongs era (here's where shit starts getting wild)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylrmS6ayKv8
    "Leaf House"
    based on the book "House of Leaves", equally experimental
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTbd0Ncsyus
    "Who Could Win A Rabbit?"
    When I hear this I feel lucky to be alive
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5xqjqm-aGw
    "We Tigers"
    I'm not sure I've ever heard of a band with this much energy
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZXSRZ1esX_g
    "Winter's Love"
    beautiful song
    ~~~

    Beyond that, it gets even more experimental. And if you get that far, let me know, because its amazing stuff -- but its probably better if you just listen to their albums at that point.

    Uh, how presumptuous! I already like Animal Collective a great deal, thank you very much.

    I kid. But seriously, 'Summertime Clothes' is fantastic. Have you listened to Four Tet, or Manitoba as they used to be called?

    Ugh, Animal Collective is like Toyotas—they never stop they just keep going! Ha ha. Everytime you think the song is ending it keeps going and going.

    I like some of their songs though. ha ha.

    absolutely (if you are referring to Caribou, who used to be called Manitoba). i still think though that the best song they ever did is "Melody Day". If you are referring to Four Tet, the experimental electronic artist, I love his music too. "Rounds" is my favorite album by him.

    Oops. I was referring to both - that sort of got crammed together into one sentence in my excess haste.

    Yes, age-wise. Band-wise though they have 9 albums, loads of b-sides, EPs, a live album of non-studio material, a movie...

    I more meant because of the electronic breakdown at the end. I would like to emphasize that in the context of that song its written to his younger brother who doesn't know what to do with his life, particularly after his father's death (brain cancer). But also I look at it as a song of inspiration for anyone.

    But then again some people ignore all that and just think its about oral sex. If people want sex-related AC lyrics -- FEELS.

    "Flesh Canoe" lyrics was written by Avey Tare with Panda Bear in mind, simply because of how close they got touring.

    Young red bird
    They're just natural feelings
    I can't keep from changing my brains
    Bending my wants with my rights
    Are my friends still half right
    Should I keep them seperate from me
    It's unclear
    Then I get a cold
    Can I get a light
    It's a certain type of easy pace
    That's what we need to make it

    Come in close
    I trust you
    Your nose dipped in my sweat
    It dripped on your beautiful sweater
    Kind of nice
    Should I really lie with you
    I never know
    When I'm on my own
    Are there more important things to do
    Then kiss or sleep today we gotta wake up

    Then I talk to your breath and we
    Enjoy the air
    And I creep on your chest
    To the hut I have
    Where I pluck a few notes
    On the strands of your hair
    And I'm singing to you
    What to do if I'd ask you to make funny faces
    With me in the mirror of the bathroom

    Know your next
    You make me feel alright
    Are you just like me
    Never gonna pick one kind of fruit
    Like a mushed banana on your tooth
    And you like the sting of the cherry juice
    Never eat an apple
    That's just one color

    Young red bird
    They're just natural feelings
    Like walking off to ride my bike
    Or just bump into you
    I haven't seen you in a week or three days
    Though it really bugs me
    It's nice to find new ways to smile
    I keep thinking that
    When you feel sad you can't pout
    Cause what this song's about is me singing
    I'm just wondering what to do with you myself and me
    Naked in the mirror of the bathroom

    "I can tell you how I relate to each song," Portner says, "but it's not as interesting."

    "It's kind of like how Pearl Jam don't do videos," agrees Weitz, clad in a worn yellow shirt, corduroy pants and just-scruffy beard. "'Cause they don't want what they think the song is about to necessarily be told to fans."

    "For instance," says Portner, "to me the song 'Flesh Canoe' is about my relationship with Noah at a certain time."

    Lennox perks up, his eyes bulging out. "That's news to me."

    "But the song is so androgynous and ambiguous about gender that anybody could listen to that and think I'm singing about a girl. It's not like the lyrics are written specifically like, 'Oh, I gotta sing this song to Noah.'"

    "When we were recording it, you were kind of staring at me," Lennox says.

    "And yet, I'm with this girl and it means a lot to me, and so I feel more connected to it in that relationship, rather than [in terms of] the lyrics that I wrote a long time ago," Portner says. After a long pause, he glances toward Lennox. "Sorry, dude."

    The conflicting interpretations thing is no joke, since the next five minutes are spent arguing over what exactly a "Flesh Canoe" is. Dibb, referencing Portner's love of slasher films, had always figured it was about making an actual boat out of someone's skin after slaughtering them. Manager Brian De Lan, who was quietly laptopping on the couch for a half-hour shouts out, "I have to say, I never thought of a dick," which nails the crassness, but supplies the wrong gender, all while Portner smiles ear to ear.

    "Or it could be the warmth of... " David stops dramatically for an uncomfortable pause. "I don't know." Noah, who has spent the last 20 minutes quietly picking at the label on a Stella Artois, breaks his insular streak and performs an exceptional Rodney Dangerfield collar tug to an erupting room.

    "...a person," Portner continues. "When you gotta share a bed on tour. I'll often wake up in the middle of the night with my arms around Noah."

    "Not on purpose," adds Noah, and brotherly laughs fill the room once more.

    Ok, party foul, I didn't really think it was about oral sex, but I did not know it was about something so serious.

    While Americans can rock, making good innovative pop music has mostly been left to the British with bands like Just Jack, Portishead, Saint Etienne, . Excepts for a few exceptions, American attempts at alternative pop has mostly been kind of cheesy and a failure. That is why I am glad to see some good stuff finally coming from some U.S. bands during the last decade like Animal Collective, MGMT, Death Cab for Cutie, LCD Soundsystem, School of Seven Bells and many others and that they are becoming popular.

    Oh I meant that I really jokingly / not serious at all (the second part). Not meant to be bashing anyone and obviously you didn't think it was about that

    And oh copypaste no I really did type all that up
