"Democrats should not talk about "the environment," "the unemployed" or "the uninsured." Instead, they should replace those phrases with ones that have more appeal to voters, such as "the air we breathe and the water we drink," "people who've lost their jobs" and "people who used to have insurance." ...

...Westen argues that Democrats constantly try to sell policies to voters through reason and facts, ignoring research showing that people respond more to emotional appeals. ..."

So true. Just look at how most of the guys here on RJ who participate in these topics frame their arguments and responses. It's 100% emotion and 0% reason and facts.

Kind of like how you just, without basis, completely took Caslon's post out of context?

...and let's not even open the whole can of worms of which party has overexploited flagrant emotionalism in governance.

I know this is a bit off the subject, but somewhat close as well. Going to throw it out there anyways. Just found this, and thought it was interesting. Just as a side note: I am an independent and tend to lean conservative but in a general insight, this is so true.

    Have a great week everyone.

    The Fence Test

If you ever wondered what side of the fence you sit on, this is a
    great test!

If a conservative doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.

If a liberal doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a conservative is a vegetarian, he doesn`t eat meat.

If a liberal is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for
    everyone.

If a conservative is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his
    situation.

Liberals wonder who is going to take care of them.

If a conservative doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.

Liberals demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.

A liberal non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.
(Unless it's a foreign religion, of course!)

If a conservative decides he needs health care, he goes aboutt
shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.

Liberals demand that the rest of us pay for theirs.

If a conservative reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can
    have a good laugh.

A liberal will delete it because he's "offended".

Ummm sorry, that';s not a true fence test lol

That test is extremely biased... and it could easily be turned around on conservatives and be equally true (a Fence Test with a leftist bias).

Sorry... not an Independent's test. "In a general insight, this is not so true...."

Totally agree, despite some of the expected & knee-jerk criticism from certain members here. I approach politics from tactical & strategic perspectives, just as I learned to do in war during my Army career.

I try not to get entangled & distracted by private motivations. My goal is strictly the success of the mission, which has nothing to do with me personally. And so I agree that Democratic politicians are not thinking tactically, nor in unison, but emotionally & individually.

Whereas their Republican opponents are examples of military unity & discipline in pursing their goals. Not goals I support, but using tactics I recognize and wish Democrats could learn to adopt. Until Democrats do, I fear they are fighting with one hand tied behind their backs. And BTW, I see the same flaw in gay activism, among other debilitating problems.

What they both need is strong & decisive leadership, and a willingness to follow it. Unfortunately, that is anathema to their natures, and so they will be perpetually disadvantaged in the arena of politics.

    You are NOT an independent.
Only a right-winger would post such obvious right-wing BS.

It's total crap, because for the last 30 years - since the religious right took over the Republican party, it's the Republicans who are interested in forcing their extreme and twisted version of Christianity on all Americans, and in telling people how to live their lives.
And anyone who's listened to Rush or Hannity or some other right-wing propagandizer rant on and on about something some left-winger said and the "left-wing media" knows that conservatives do NOT just calmly change the channel when they hear something they don't like.
They bitch and moan and try to tell the person who said something they don't like to shut up.
Conservatives are extremely "offended" whenever anyone disagrees with them, and want everyone to think and look and act the same way they do.
If a conservative isn't a vegetarian - he makes fun of people who are.
If a conservative is down and out - he cashes his unemployment check just like everyone else, but he whines hypocritically about the government while he spends those government dollars.

The reason a conservative would forward this piece of bs to his friends is because it's right-wing propaganda.

Well - he's already ended the recession, since we've had three quarters in a row of economic growth and nine straight months of manufacturing growth.
And the stock market has gained 3,000 points since he took office.
And we had the best month of job growth in April in 4 years.
So, things have gotten better - contrary to what you've obviously been hearing on Fox.

    The Fence Test

    bla blabla
    waffle

    There is another one:

If a liberal loses an election he just gets on with winning the next
If a conservative loses an election they (1) fake it in FL (e.g. 2000) (2) obstruct and delay the winning party from effective government (2008 to date) (3) whine pathetically on the internet (SouthBeach, whoever wrote the original list).

Of course I´m neutral, but as a general insight this is so true.

    Everyone else:

Ya it's pretty low to attack southbeach as a troll simply because his worldview is different than the majoriety on this site. 'Don't feed the troll?" come on... seriously?

If you don't like what southbeach has to say ignore him. Or avoid his forum topics... simply by reading his topic headings it's pretty easy to discern which topics are from southbeach.

Both democrats and republicans are hypocrites as far as I am concerned. They are only interested in pressing issues come election time, otherwise it is business as usual.
