"FROMBORK, Poland (May 22) -- Nicolaus Copernicus, the 16th-century astronomer whose findings were condemned by the Roman Catholic Church as heretical, was reburied by Polish priests as a hero today, nearly 500 years after he was laid to rest in an unmarked grave.

I bet certain high members of the clergy 500 years ago were educated enough to know Copernicus was most likely right, but the Church had no choice if it was going to maintain its power .
These days if a theory , proven true sometime in the future, were to be discarded, it would probably be from simple failure to capture interest from the scientific community .
