Attention beach runners and cyclists! How often do you get to race for 8 miles on uninterrupted, pristine beach at low tide? The 13th (?) annual Coronado Low Tide Ride and Stride takes place Sunday, June 13, 2010. The course starts in Imperial Beach (the southernmost beach community in San Diego) and heads north for 8.2 miles along the Silver Strand, ending at the charming hamlet of Coronado. The course passes through the training beaches of the Naval Amphibious Base -- normally off limits to civilians.

This event is billed as the longest all beach run or ride on the Pacific Coast, whatever that means.

At low tide the beach is firm packed, fast and flat, so all you wusses who run in shoes can participate. I plan to be there, one of the very few runners going barefoot.

That almost looks fun, except that they're WAY overdressed for the beach.

San Diego beaches are always chilly. I used to live in Imperial beach!! Cheap rent but it's pretty ghetto...

Remind me not to move to (nor visit) San Diego. I go into hibernation when it drops below 75°F.

Damn that sounds like so much fun!
And I agree w/Paul on the overdressed... give me a small pair of funky colored gym shorts and I'll run it shirtless and barefoot! hahaha!

Yeah, I only see 1.5 guys who are appropriately shirtless. What's the point of participating in such a sexy event??

especially when we know runners typically overdress during races.
It's quite funny in fact, in Spring races here the guys at the front are in shorts and tank tops while at the back they're dressed up to hike across the north pole.

and San Diego can't be THAT cold.
looks like a great event though ...no one running barefoot ?

Hah! Let's mash three topics and create a new thread: "Running shirtless and barefoot on the beach."

What surprises me is how few beach runners I see in San Diego. Maybe there's more activity elsewhere, but along the Del Mar - Torrey Pines - Black's Beach corridor I don't encounter many beach runners at all, much less shirtless runners, barefoot runners, shirtless barefoot runners, and never mind naked runners (to add in yet another thread).

Come on, San Diego runners, get with the program--this is SAN DIEGO!

    2012 UPDATE

All right, for 2012 here are three San Diego-area events for beach runners / cyclists / swimmers / surfers:

    1. This year's Carlsbad Beach Fest (Saturday, June 9) has expanded its competitive events to include a 5k beach run, a beach triathlon (swim, run, paddle/prone), two beach duathlons (run, swim; or run, paddle), and a 1-mile ocean swim.

    2. For runners and cyclists, the 2012 Coronado Low Tide Ride and Stride (Sunday, June 24) is 8.2 miles from Imperial Beach to Coronado.

    3. This year's Pacific Beachfest (Saturday, October 6; website is not up to date) offers an 8k beach run from Pacific Beach Crystal Pier to the Mission Beach Jetty.

I might try all three of these beach runs this year. Anybody else interested?
