it varies...depending on the amt of exposure they have or get
a new performer may get a few hundred for a "scene"
while a well-known actor might get a few thousand for the same
it's on the whole not as much as you might think

I am not sure why people referr to porno actors as "stars."

I do not think you can make a regular living in porno except if you are a female in the straight porn insudtry.

Almost all of them suppliment their income as prostitutes.

    It all depends.

I work in the Gay porn world and can tell you it's just a business like any other. profits have to be made, so keeping costs down is imperiative.

Models (the guys appearing in the movies) are surprisingly low paid. And as NYm says above they use the movies to make themselves a name so they can charge more then for their escort and personal appearance work (where they get most of their money from).

If you speak to a model they will tell you they earn 1,000s per scene. Infact most earn much less. In Europe you generally earn about 700-800 dollars per scene. The reason that there is a lot of movies made in Eastern Europe is that the guys are cheap and good looking there and the money they earn per scene is equivalent to a monthly wage. Which is not the same as in the Uk and the US.

We recently paid a well known US model to fly to the Uk to appear in one of our movies. He was paid $2,000 for 3 scenes, about 3 days work. He said he was paid much more by the big companies like Falcon, but I wouldn't be too sure.

Not enough for them to take the risk of dying of AIDS. A lot of so call gay porns star in the 80'S and 90'S dies of this disease. Most of them do "bareback" because that what the audience want to see. Just to name a few Al Parker, John Holmes (he do gay also) and few more. Not worth the risk.

$2000 per 3 scenes?! After taxes, you cannot even live on that for 2 weeks here in New York City... You would have to constantly making up to at least 10 if not a lot more scenes each and every month just to get by here in New York City... Yikes!

a lot of them supplement there income with gogo dancing / stripping. one thing that I have been told alters the amount they are paid is top or bottom. You apparently get paid more to top than to bottom because you have to stay hard for so long. Most porn stars also take viagra for the scenes because the average person can't keep an erection for 4 hours

The going rate here is about $1,000 per "money shot" aka cumshot for someone with an established name. Newbies get less.

They ALL use it as supplementary income - I know porn actors who have jobs as waiters, bankers, masseurs, trainers, real estate agents, at least one is a university lecturer....

Most who work with major studios go the safe-sex route, although there are studios that specialize in barebacking. It used to be fairly common to see cocaine on sets to keep the actors in the right frame of mind, but this kind of thing is disappearing.

Like any fringe industry and fringe occupation, some of it is shadowy and seedy, some of it is remarkably mundane. I have one client who used to direct porn, and the amount of work required to set up a shot that looks casual and "hot" is huge. The actors are more likely thinking about whether their abs are flexed and their arms are pumped than thinking about their onscreen partner's sex appeal.

If I had to sum it up, it's about as thrilling as doing catalog modeling -

Come to San Francisco...everyone is a porn "star"...if you live in SF and are not one, let me know - LOL!

Actually, I know a lot of really cool guys in the industry...some are stuck up little pricks while others like Michael Brandon and Jake Deckard are the sweetest, nicest guys around...

Most of the postings on this topic essentially are spot on....to sit in on a live "taping" is quite an experience...

I am sure people in the porn industry came from all backgrounds and some are very educated and intelligent.

I am just curious how someone can work as a banker or a univerisity lecturer (is he a teaching assistant, guest lectuerer, assistant professor, associate professor, or a professor...?) given the scheduling involved with a 9 to 5 (and beyond) job... And some industries such as a university professor, that would be a HUGE thing if the board finds out what you do on the side for $$$...

Actually one interesting example is fromthe straight porn industry. Sharon Mitchell was once a hard core straight porn actress but eventually ent back to school and is now a full medical doctor. She runs a grass roots medical organization catered to test HIV and provided STD prevention and health care for the porn industry. She said that she cannot possibly do porn nowdays and actually has a very negative view about the industry, but she is trying to help with her ability. There is a film about her.. Very interesting and actually quite admirable...

Two years ago, I went to the Gay Pride fair after the parade in San Francisco. Of all the booths that was thronged the most...the Falcon porn "star" booth was mobbed.

Are those guys good looking/gorgeous...most are, at some point, of course. Not any more so than many guys on this very website or on my hotlist... :-)....

But, what struck me is this...and I wonder how many gay men who are awe struck by these guys realize it...these men have an HIV infection rate
several times that of other gay men. They also have early mortality (don't know the actual numbers, but I am sure someone here does) compared to the rest of us gay guys.

Finally, it's sad that these guys are idolized...for looking good and having sex...while there are other gay men who are working for good in the world, have become doctors, lawyers, professors... But the culture rewards looks/beauty/sexuality more than these other achievements.

Do you have studies and statistics to back up those assertions about infection rates?

    PSBigJoey...

I am hoping that someone from the medical community on RealJock can comment...either to back this up, or to tell me that the info is offbase.

I heard this from a Chief of Staff of Psychiatry at a major East Coast hospital...as we were chatting about this very issue. But that was about six months ago or so. The story that stimulated the conversation was in the news at the time...about a former gay porn star, who ended up incarcarated in Colorado for petty theft, and pimping while being a ski instructor. He ended up committing suicide in prison.

I expressed sympathy, and he ended up directing me to a website that listed gay porn stars who had died from AIDs and suicide.

He quoted statistics that stated that 40% of gay porn stars have at least one communicable sexually-transmitted disease, and gave me a reference.

Since you posted, I have been going through my emails to find his with the references, and can't. I'll keep on digging for the formal references.

I did find his email pointing me to a list of around 100 or so who have died of AIDS...

I also like to know how someone BigJoey knows is a university lecturer while doing porno...

Fastprof is a university professor, so was my little sister at one time, and I am in constant contact with universities as I am a clinical instructor for interns at my hospital. I CANNOT imagine one can comfortable do this, unless you are only a one time guest to speak about something...

I am sure many guys who get into porno are very intelligent and educated, but I am not sure if there are some personal emotional issues behind the exteriors of these guys. NYC is not the capital as compared to Weho when it comes to gay porn, but the guys in sex industry we have here, while most are very nice guys, most are very troubled in their lives...

I also agree fully with Fastprof when it comes to our gay bubble culture idolizing porno actors... A great body, hard work anddisciplein at the gym, and sex appeal are admired by many, but porno, like prostitution, is an industry of using sex as a transaction. Sure, most men who do this probably have emotional ego issues dealing with one's self sexual esteem and probably are mis-directed and need to validate this sexual ego with porno, at at the end of the day, porno, like prostitution, is sex for entertaiment and $$ transactions. How do we justify idolizing this skill as compared to someone who is passionate about a cause and doing humanitarian works, going through years of hard academic work and becoming a professor, doctor, attorney, judge, etc???

I really do not understand this idolization of porno actors in the gay community... Inthe straight community, it is only something guys fantasize about but still looked down as what it really is: sex workers.
