The Immense flaw in DADT that any gay/bi/curious service member is all to familiar with, is the fact that your unit becomes your family and it is impossible to separate your personal life from your cadre and from your battle buddies without blatantly lying, without purposeful deceit.
I'm a firm believer in the army values and my favorite one, which I was selected to recite during my graduation from BCT, was Integrity.
There is no Integrity and honesty when such a system is in place.
I even heard someone once go as far as to say that homosexuality was a danger to unit moral. I think whats dangerous for unit moral is forcing members of a unit to distance themselves from their unit. To lie to their unit. To always know that they are less than the rest of the members of their unit.
Which is exactly how I feel when its not ok for me to admit that my bf is my bf when I take him to a family function my commander is holding, a guy I've been with for years, but then its ok for other people to introduce girlfriends they've known for a week.
Its pure prejudice. There is no excuse for it and people allow silly reasons like whether they agree with homosexuality in the first place to affect their views on whether gay people should be allowed to openly to serve or not.
And I stop to think, thats just the nature of this hateful, so called progressive yet limited nation. To fear change, to hate a minority.
In order to make things right. I either get to serve as an open homosexual male, or lets just take DADT to the next level and not only are you not allowd to say if you're gay or not, but you can't say if you're straight either. We'll just keep it all one big secret and do what the fucking military was meant to do in the first place which is train and deploy.
