...and my age had updated! Another year.

But alas, this isn't a birthday thread. It's more existential than that, as I'm not that crass and shameless. icon_wink.gif

My question is about the benchmarks in life. Birthdays, anniversaries, etc. What are the benchmarks you always remember and/or celebrate? Which ones catch you by surprise?

For me, I make a big deal out of the birthdays of friends. And I always ruminate on June 28th, the day my uncle died of AIDS related causes.

The wedding/commitment anniversaries of my siblings is what catches me by surprise, as all three are in long term committed marriages/relationships, two of them at 11+ years. (And I'm the bachelor oldest!) Though I'm rather anti-marriage, their anniversaries - when mentioned and I'm suddenly "Oh, wow..." - always cause me to pause...and consider. Luckily, I get over it quickly.

I don't really feel like I have any milestones to celebrate.

    Happy Birthday!

To answer your question (I hope), one of my benchmarks is NOT my birthday, though my partner insists on making it seem like it is. In fact, a few RJers have been invited to the little cocktail party he's arranged for next month.

But I start using my next age on New Year's Day, making that my official birthday, just like Elizabeth II has an actual and an official birthday. I figure what's good enough for the Queen of England is good enough for the queen of Wilton Manors. icon_cool.gif

What I do celebrate is St. Patrick's Day. Not because I happen to be partly Irish, but because it's the day I came out gay, now 15 years ago. I consider that my rebirth, my second birthday, and I like it better than my first.

I also remember my late partner's death from AIDS, and always try to do something in his memory that day.

US national holidays always catch me by surprise, and I'm never prepared for them, never make big 3-day weekend plans like everyone else does. I have no idea why I fail to do that, I just don't pay attention enough. icon_sad.gif

Oh c'mon. There has to be some occasion that makes you festive or you find yourself surprised by the fun of others.

The only meaningful benchmarks for me are
    coming out 9.9.88
    meeting my boyfriend 9.27.93
coming to the US (= moving in with each other) 12.12.99

I totally ignore my birthdays and wish others would, too ( I have no issues with my age)

Happy Birthday! I actually have one coming up next week, and it's really the only benchmark in life that I celebrate.

One that did catch me by surprise is my dad telling me a second cousin of mine will be graduating high school this summer and I'm supposed to attend the party. It's been a while since I seen him, so it's hard for me to imagine that he's completing high school. I only remember him as a little boy.

    P.S.

Anti-marriage? That's going to be a disappointment for some guys out there.

    Happy Birthday Ben icon_biggrin.gif

I don't celebrate my birthday but the one benchmark date I do remember is July 16th. That was the day I went in for surgery and was diagnosed with cancer. Mind you that was 1982 and I was out cold from the surgery for a couple days. You tend not to forget news like that. Curiously, I don't remember the date I was done with chemo; I just know it was some time in October 2 years later.

Well since it's not a birthday thread, are you like old? or just not as old as you feel? icon_smile.gif

Milestones, hmmmm nope. Just keep on keeping gone really. I do have a fear about how it all ends but so do a majority of people.

Right now distractions from life itself of any kind are important to me to try and stick to a routine and re-discover myself. I'm 36 this year, wondering where I'm going, still feeling like there is a lot to do and see and plenty of people to meet.

As a single father, I note the school years of my daughter. I cannot believe that she is just about to enter the third grade.
