It's funny what people will do with a beer can. Like shoving it up a chicken's butt.

Yes, and for duck as well as chicken. I know this as "beer can chicken." Actually what I use is a Weber product, that does the same thing, but holds the bird better, and I do it inside a Weber charcoal kettle grill.

I may be one of the few people who attempts Duck a L'Orange over charcoal, using the Weber beer can device. You can put almost anything inside a real beer can or the Weber implement, from water to beer to practically any alcoholic beverage. The heat causes the liquid to steam the inside of the bird.

For Duck a L'Orange I use Grand Marnier inside the Weber device, which I also slosh around inside the duck before putting it on the covered grill. Of course I boil the duck first, for about 15 minutes, to remove some of the greasy fat, and also to slightly pre-cook it.

Yeah, beer can chicken is very popular, not unusual or strange at all.

You take the beer can out before you serve it, dude. It's just grilled that way, with some beer in the can and other good stuff that steams the chicken from the inside out and makes the skin very crispy. The chicken comes out amazing. I can't believe people haven't heard of this.

We've definitely done beer can chicken on the BBQ - even without the device. You should give it a try.

I've done this before ... back in college. I now have a grilling product that is more classy than the old can-up-the-ass method.

It helps to keep the chicken off the grate so it cooks evenly and has less chance of burning/drying out. You keep the beer in the can, which helps to keep the bird moist while enhancing flavor. I recommend using other liquids, but most country hicks prefer to stick with using beer.

To be fair, I do still boil my ribs in beer for 10 minutes before I grill them. I suppose that means I'm still a hick, myself.

Beer can chicken is my absolute FAVORITE thing to eat. I could eat it for every meal I think. And yes, I eat the skin too, its the best part.

Ok - I am going to have to try this and see how it is.

I remember when my friends first said they were going to have Deep Fried Turkey on Thanksgiving and I was like what??? but now I have it every year.

Time to grab a beer and start grilling.

Here's a pic of the Weber version I have, and other companies make them, too. You fill the center cup on the left with some liquid, frequently alcoholic, then place the 4-pronged device over it, which has an opening in the center. Next you impale the upright whole bird over the prongs, and place the entire thing on the grill or in the oven

Heat causes the liquid to steam off inside the bird's body cavity. Apparently the original method was to use an actual beer can full of beer, though balancing the bird upright was an issue, necessitating putting the bird in a pot or using some other solution.
