The FDA has planned a public hearing with the advisory committee on blood safety and availability to discuss the possibility of changing current federal regulations that prevent men who have had sex with men from donating blood. They've invited the public to attend as well as anyone who wishes to speak directly to the committee and present statistics or expert opinions related to the topic. My research in grad school has focused specifically on HIV populations and living in the south I have witnessed first hand the patient demographics of those infected shift from gay white men to African-American heterosexual males and females. The current law is outdated, homophobic, and discriminatory. Please take a moment to look over this petition and the proposed changes to current FDA regulations and the way in which blood donations are handled.
