    Hello All,

Me and my boyfriend are going to Market Days in August this year. I am very excited to be visiting Chicago for my first time ever. icon_biggrin.gif

Lodging will not be an issue as we are staying with a couple that my BF is good friends with. I also have a cousin that lives there with his family. We are flying in on a Thursday morning and flying out the following Tuesday afternoon.

So guys, for those of you who live in and/or have visited Chicago I need advice. We plan on definitely going to a couple of gay bars one night during the Market Days festivities.

A caveat: I can appreciate the gay scene and realize that it can be a different experience depending where you go. I have no problem going gay clubs/bars and watching a drag show with my significant other and friends and have a blast. However, I do not deal with super bitchy twinks and pretentious douches who degrade other guys who are not decked out in Abercrombie & Fitch, not wearing the correct jeans and who are in the wrong "clique". If you have ever met me I am a t-shirt/jeans/sneakers wearing guy who does not put up with BS and can be a bit abrasive if need be. I am friendly and approachable guy aside from that. You can draw your own conclusions from my profile I am sure.

So what clubs/bars should I avoid like the plague and which ones should I definitely check out? I welcome any advice you guys have.

SideTrack (http://www.sidetrackchicago.com/) is all right. Good stand-n-model opportunities, good eye candy. Some cliquishness (because people tend to come in small, safe cluster), but it's unavoidable at a certain level. If you hate people, you can stand and watch videos all night long. If you love people, you can pretend to watch videos all night long.

I enjoy going to Charlie's (http://charlieschicago.com/) for country dancing. It's virtually BS-free, the boys aren't all that much into themselves, and there's plenty to watch and/or partake in, without feeling like an outsider. I seem to recall that Friday night had more going on, gay country-wise, but that may have changed in the last few years.

Roscoe's is good too, a nice and sprawling bar with a dance area too. You probably would not like Minibar.

I'm going to market days, too. My first time in Chicago. So I'm reading this post thread with great interest. I'm way the hell too big to fit in with twink "OUT" magazine boys, LOL.

LOL! Yes, with my build I am a non-H&M-jeans wearing guy that would stand out like a sore thumb with the aforementioned twinks you speak of.

Jackhammer (http://www.jackhammer-chicago.com/) is the most fun in my opinion. But it's a bit of a trip north. You can bus/train it up there super easy though.

Love Scarlet (http://www.scarletbarchicago.com/), but I'm biased. ;) More hipster scene/random fun. If you're in on Thursday, definitely check out Frat Night.

T-shirt and jeans type too. Chicago is fun, you'll have a great time. Hopefully it's not too hot. I was there for the gay games a few years ago and the first three days were the most miserable heat I've ever been in. I grew up in Tucson and have been in Atlanta and Florida both in August. Chicago was hotter.

Take it from a life long Chicagoan, any gay bar you go to you will have a good time...This is the Midwest not the east or west coast....people here are warm and friendly...and human. You will even feel welcomed in the Lesbian bars...so go for it and have fun....Market Days is cool, but so is any weekend in the city.
Personally I prefer IML....but thats just me

I am all for the RJ guys meeting up. I have mentioned that in other posts for other events like UFC fights and such. I think it would be cool. Pick a day and a bar and all the RJ guys show up. Then we can scatter to other places based upon individual interests. I am all for it.

If you don't feel like being inside, all of the clubs have sitting areas on the street and they all have booths set up.

MuchMoreThanMuscle saidGoing alone to these gay themed events usually equates to more opportunistic sluttish windows of whoredom.

Or something along those lines. icon_idea.gificon_idea.gificon_idea.gif

Unless you're like me and wander about aimlessly and get ignored except when nasty sloppy drunks scream "I wanna fuck that fat little cub!" at me.

That's the biggest and only opportunistic window for sluttishness I've ever had.icon_cry.gif

I'm not a huuuge fan of the boystown scene (i much prefer Andersonville), but Scarlet is among my favorite bars there. Frat Night on thursdays = AMAZING.... 5 dollar Longisland MUGS and 5 dollar 40's ... you can't beat that.

Oh, and Minibar is pretty fun if you like eye-candy (and very strong drinks).

I live 50 feet from Sidetrack, Minibar and Roscoes and don't have a ton to add.

However, Market Days, crazy as it is, is WAY better than IML. And the neighborhood doesn't smell like stale piss, as it did today post-IML.

Sidetrack is the mother ship - start there, and you'll either want to stay or decide that one of the 10 other bars/clubs within 5 blocks in any direction would be better. The real fun is being on Halsted, anyway.

Then stay as far away from Roscoes as you possibly can; Circuit and Hydrate, too. My boyfriend and I really enjoy Sidetracks, particularly Sunday afternoon on the upstairs patio. Jimmy is really the best bartender, IMO.

You might also enjoy Charlies after 1 PM, or so. They're a country western bar, but the music changes to dancy-kinda-stuff around 130/200 AM, and they're open till 500 AM. It's very laid back, and the guys are usually pretty easy to chat with.

Keep in mind that ALL of these places will be extremely busy and packed over Market Days. If you can handle the crowds and the jostling, you'll get along fine. Boyfriend and I will be around, too. Say hi if you see me.

I agree with both of these. I went up to Chicago two weekends ago for the first time. We first went to Roscoes, and it was terrible in my opinion. They only carry miller products as far as beer, and the other drink i ordered was disgusting. I quickly..and went to Side Track. It was really nice, friendly people and acutally made some friends while i was there.

The next night we went to Charlies, and it was pretty fun as well. Nice bar tenders and nice people. icon_smile.gif
