Hey guys just thought i would post up this topic because i am actually stuck at home with a cold atm. although i'm not some maniac health freak, i never have and never will treat cold's or many other minor sicknesses (such as the flu, etc) with medicine or antibiotics. i won't deny reaching for pain killers when the pain gets too much, but thats usually when im at the point of desperation.

I say to each their own, when it comes to medicating themselves, however I choose not too. There always seems to be something in the back of my head saying that the body has nearly all the mechanisms to deal with colds, and flu and fever etc.

but giving it a little help along the way with natural home made remedies is how i like to treat it and lots of rest. I would just love to know how most of you deal with minor sicknesses such as the cold and what natural remedies that you like to have on hand. as we all know that certain foods do wonders for the immune system and fighting off sickness.

for me, i love to make plenty of ginger tea and avoid sugar when im sick. but when im better the first thing i reach for is chocolate ! yum

Cold and flu, I boil ginger root with a bit of black pepper in a pot till the water is a deep yellow. Sweeten it with a bit of lemon juice and drink as much as I can humanly stand. It soothes the throat and the stomach. Plus drinking so much of it helps flush everything out of the system.

I go for Zicam lozenges or chews (nothing nasal as that can cause permanent sensory loss) as soon as I feel a cold coming on. It really cuts down the severity and duration. Also lots of herbal tea with honey, and plenty of rest.

Airborne (all natural) also seems to work, but not as well.

Extra time in the sauna and/or steam room seems to help too.

yeah i hear steam is great for a cold. i used to have to wear a towel on my head with a boiling pot of water with eucalyptus oil in it when i was a child. but thanks for reminding me of that. now if i can only find a sauna haha

I make a hot drink of fresh sage leaves, lemon juice, honey and hot water. It's also great for relieving congestion. Sage isn't to everyone's taste but it is very helpful. In general even lots of plain water drunk throughout one's cold etc. is very helpful since it flushes the various poisons out of the body.

Feel well and Get well soon.

Cod Liver Oil usto be the cure all way back when and if you ask me it's still a legit option. It's mostly know for it's health benefits in the long run but the short term soothing feeling of coasting ur throat with fat makes life much better when u have a sore throat.

Squeeze fresh lemon juice into water, or your food. I was told by a doctor that the lemon juice coats your stomach and helps to keep your body from absorbing all that stuff. I'm not quite sure whether it works or not, but I do it on a daily basis.

If you feel a sore throat coming on or you want to try preventing it. Use oregano oil found at your health store. It's strong! First time I took it I put one drop to the back of my throat and I felt like it was killing all the bugs...including me! It did a great job though at disinfecting. I think next time I do it I'll put a drop in half a cup of water, mix it up to spread it out, then drink it down. You can google search oregano oil applications online. If you want access to some of the highest quality vitamin/herbs I mentioned above send me a PM. I call it the triple tickle cocktail!

Get plenty of rest. Tylenol PM for body aches and fever plus, it will help you sleep. I use lemon, bourbon and honey for sore throat and/or Ginger Chews from Trader Joe. If you have congestion, I always use Robitussin Night Time. Don't ever mix OTC drugs. Feel better!

Cold and flu tablets and get on with it- catch it at the start and you won't feel the brunt.

I also avoid anti-biotics as much as possible, the doctors in Sydney seemed to ofer them for EVERYTHING, even just because you have a cold.

My grandmother [god bless her country soul] used a bourbon (or brandy) concoction to burn away a cold. She would heat up the bourbon, steep a tea bag in it, sweeten it with honey and add lemon to it, then send you to bed to sweat it out.

I will drink twice the amount of water as usual, and apple juice and gatorade, and I take unisom (sleep aid) and it helps me sleep throughout the day and I just spend a day sleeping and both nights, after that I'm usually good to go after that. sleep is usually the reason I get sick, I just don't get enough.
