Israeli commandos storm aid flotilla; 10 killed
    AP

By AMY TEIBEL and TIA GOLDENBERG, Associated Press Writers Amy Teibel And Tia Goldenberg, Associated Press Writers – 38 mins ago

JERUSALEM – Israeli naval commandos stormed a flotilla of ships carrying aid and hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists to the blockaded Gaza Strip on Monday, killing at least 10 passengers in a predawn raid that set off worldwide condemnation and a diplomatic crisis.

Israel said its commandos were attacked by knives, clubs and live fire from two pistols wrested from soldiers after they rappelled from a helicopter to board one of the vessels.

Dozens of activists and at least 10 Israeli soldiers were wounded in the bloody confrontation in international waters.

Reaction was swift and harsh, with a massive protest breaking out in Turkey, Israel's longtime Muslim ally, which unofficially supported the mission. Ankara announced it would recall its ambassador and call off military exercises with the Jewish state.

The bloody showdown came at a sensitive time in Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was to meet Tuesday with President Barack Obama to discuss the next round in U.S.-led indirect negotiations. From Toronto, Netanyahu spoke by telephone with top Israeli officials and expressed his "full backing" for the military, according to a statement from the army.

The White House said in a written statement that the United States "deeply regrets" the loss of life and injuries and was working to understand the circumstances surrounding this "tragedy."

The activists were headed to Gaza on a mission meant to draw attention to the blockade, which Israel and Egypt imposed after the militant Hamas group seized the territory of 1.5 million Palestinians in 2007.

There were conflicting accounts of what happened early Monday, with activists claiming the Israelis fired first and Israel insisting its forces fired in self defense. Communications to the ships were cut off shortly after the raid began.

An Israeli commando who spoke to reporters on a naval vessel off the coast, and who was identified only by the first letter of his name, "A," said he and his comrades were surprised by a group of Arabic-speaking men when they rapelled onto the deck.

He said some of the soldiers, taken off guard, were stripped of their helmets and equipment and thrown from the top deck to the lower deck, and that some had even jumped overboard to save themselves. At one point one of the passengers seized one of the soldiers' weapons and opened fire.

A high-ranking naval official displayed a box confiscated from the boat containing switchblades, slingshots, metal balls and metal bats. "We prepared (the soldiers) to deal with peace activists, not to fight," he said. Most of the 10 dead were Turkish, he added.

A Turkish website showed video of pandemonium on board one of the ships, with activists in orange life jackets running around as some tried to help an activist apparently unconscious on the deck. The site also showed video of an Israeli helicopter flying overhead and Israeli warships nearby.

    Well. Isnt this nice?

Honestly, I won't make a solid opinion until all the facts of what happened are out there. I will say this, the activists were stupid to provoke the Israelis period. Whether Israel overreacted is something that remains to be seen. Israel overreacted (in my opinion) in 2006 and no nation is infallible.

    Ohhhh, puhhh-leaze

    This happened in INTERNATIONAL WATERS

Even if Israel claims to have jurisdiction in Gaza waters, it doesn't matter when they attack outside of their own waters.

Move along now...Just your friendly neighbor, the Israeli military

The video footage from the ship tells a very different story. Those weren't "humanitarian workers" onboard. Aid workers don't hit soldiers with crowbars, stab with knives, throw soldiers overboard, etc.... The video footage from the incident is just starting to be released. When it's posted, anyone in their right mind will understand what happened.

The video shows dozens of supposed "aid workers" ganging up on individual soldiers, hitting them repeatedly with crowbars, chanting war songs in Turkish, etc.

Can you even imagine what kind of response the US would have if something like this happened to the US Coast Guard? Israel showed an incredible amount of restraint, probably too much... watch the videos when they come out.

How many "relief workers" with crowbars can you count?
Watch how many "relief workers" gang up on each individual soldier.

Army service in Israel is compulsory. Those "soldiers" are most likely 18-19 year old kids, who are being beaten ruthlessly by a "humanitarian mission".

The soldiers are the ones coming down the ropes and the guy being thrown overboard, circled in yellow. The supposed "aid workers" are the ones with crowbars.

Yes, watching the video definitely tells a different story than we are getting in the press at the moment. It appears that Israel did use a great deal of restraint and that their actions were more in self-defense than anything. These supposed crowbar-carrying "Humanitarian workers" were defiant, then got violent, and the Israeli reaction ensued. Should be interesting to see how the U.N. handles this latest flare-up

The UN (and Europe) have an overwhelmingly Arab majority these days. So, they will condemn Israel no matter what. It has nothing to do with the facts.

The numbers speak for themselves - 10 relief workers killed. Not 10 soldiers.

The real question: I wonder why they were attacking the boat anyway? hmm... lets see... the ruthless Israeli government again strikes against anyone who would help the Palestinians. Of course you could care less about the Palestinians living in squalor, SeaSon.

I am supposed to feel bad for those soldiers because they support Israel's terrorist state policies? No, not really. These guys are just getting a small taste of the horror that the impose on Palestinians every single day. In any case the relief workers were attacked in Int'l waters - and they defended themselves.

The real heroes are the Israeli soldiers who refuse to kill Palestinians- even if it means disciplinary action from Israel. Those are the people who know right from wrong.

Yes … how dare these people try to defend themselves … they are in international water (so it’s Israeli of course) and commandoes in guns arrived in helicopters.. They should sit like duck waiting for them to kill them all …. Stupid people … don’t they know the Mediterranean sea belongs to Israeli … OMG they speak Arabic … they must be terrorist … and the food and drugs are nothing but nuclear weapons that will destroy Israel …. Anyway why on earth they even think of giving food to Palestinians.. How will they starve to death if the world keeps sending food for them …. And wait wait .. the last thing … these people are soooooooooo anti-Semitic ..

On a totally different topic … how lovely from the military to video tape the event.. I wonder did the actors did it for free or did they have to pay them money .

I would like to know WHY the Israeli soldiers boarded the vessel to begin with...and
Why wouldn't ANYONE on board have the right to defend themselves with whatever was at hand...doubt ANY of those on board had automatic weapons, as did the Israeli soldiers.
For what ever the people on board the small boats had in mind... what gives the Israelis the right to board in INTERNATIONAL WATERS???
I am NOT Pro-Zionist nor anti-Semitic... BUT I do think that the U.S. has "coddled" Israel for far too long.. for ONE reason only... MONEY!
When you bring the word "terrorism" into the equation... exactly WHO are the terrorists? What country do they come from? What religion do they practice? Is there such a person as an Israeli terrorist?
Of the above questions, I have one answer that is certain... YES, there are Israeli terrorists... call them what you like, but their actions bespeak their name!

Israel doesn't send its soldiers out for fun. Those "aid missions" are usually designed to smuggle weapons into the Palestinian authorities. Weapons which are then used to kill Israelis. That's why the army gets sent.

As you can see in the video, the people onboard were hardly peace activists.

I never said they were peace activists - they were trying to deliver normal every day goods that the Gazans dont have access to because of the blockade. Greenpeace has been known to be a little "crazy" sometimes, but I think they do good work.

And it will be interesting to see if any weapons are found on that ship. I think that by now, if there had been any found, we'd have heard about it. The Israelis would have made sure of that... they always make sure to tell the whole world how everyone wants to kill them.

To make an attack on Arab members of RJ is a PRIME example of your level of intelligence... and WAY off base!!!

Considering the hatred Israel evokes, even relief workers will arm themselves with more than just angry words.

It's easy to see why Israeli soldiers opened fire.

The arguing in this thread though would do well to separate Palestinian apartheid and this incident.

I think the video footage really speaks for itself.

We'll likely hear the same Palestinian propoganda that's always posted on these forums. Palestinians are never at fault for anything. They can blow up a bus and it's still Israel's fault. Attempt to blow up the NYC subway system and they're just interested in "peace". At some point the world will wake up.

You're right, it does speak for itself. It shows soldiers attacking / raiding a boat full of relief workers. lol. So they defended themselves.... And 9 or 10 of them got killed by the Soldiers in the process. That's 9 people killed in international waters. None of the soldiers were killed.

And wait when did we say that the Palestinians do nothing wrong .. No they do bad things ,,, but Israel acts like a government not individuals not militia not a group … a complete army ………..

You're lack of friends is obvious.
