Iran Jails Reporter for Ahmadinejad Photo
    By Michelle Garcia
A Newsweek reporter was sentenced to 13.5 years in prison and 74 lashings in Iran for several charges, including allowing a photo to be posted on his Facebook page featuring Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appearing to kiss another man on the lips.

The photo of Ahmadinejad, which shows him kissing another man, cost him an additional six months in prison

They certainly do not play games over there and sucks to be this reporter but you have to know who you're playing with before spreading rumors and more than likely false ones at that.

Hopefully the reporter gets out of this.

What idiot would even attempt to run this story? Wait. What idiot would even consider running this story?

An 'idiot' who decided to take a stand against oppression? Maybe the method wasn't the wisest, but I guess we shouldn't take our freedoms for granted.

Stand up by spreading lies? This is not a way to stand up for our freedoms. Quite frankly doing nonsense like this only hurts matters. Now time and resources will be wasted to try to get this guy out of trouble. All of this time, energy and money can be going to something much more constructive. Spreading lies that this nutjob leader is a gay is rather lame, counterproductive and rather immature.

Yeah, you have a point. I was just looking to jump on a soap box. I guess my beef is just that the man said that there are no gays in Iran and then severely oppresses the community there. Where is his punishment for spreading lies and causing harm?

And in the West, we say stuff about our leaders all the time - Bush is a moron, Harper's a robot, Obama is a socialist - because we have the freedom to express it.

So the method and the message are wrong. But does the crime fit the punishment?

There are many underlying issues associated with this and that's what gets me.

Not relevant. No person should be stupid enough to criticize an authoritarian regime and expect to get away with it. The punishment may not have fit the crime, but people should know better. Unless he wanted to be a martyr it which case I would say that was a very effective method.

I love you. I hope you can stay in the U.S. to avoid persecution. Or make it back to Iran if it becomes secular and more gay-friendly again.

You're right. Everyone should have learned from Valerie Plame's mistake.

Actually, I've always thought Ahmadinejad is handsome...masculine and rugged looking...though I don't care for his politics, so if he and I ever had the chance to date it's something I'd avoid discussing.

Calling someone gay should not qualify as defamation of character.
    Definitely not in this country.

    But in all seriousness...

telling a reporter that he deserves what he gets in this story because, to paraphrase, "he should have known better," is analagous to telling the victim of sexual assault it was his/her fault for wearing provocative clothing while walking in a dangerous neighborhood.
