If you love camp, cheesy costumes, and cute gals and guys, I recommend Sailor Moon Live Action. It has decent production values (with daring uses of CGI), adorable characters (Usagi / Sailor Moon is inspiring in her good-heartedness), and a gorgeous villain (Queen Beryl + live action = divine camp).

Here is the opening (YouTube quality, unfortunately):

Oh man, you made me remember an especially wretched piece of crap.

An American live action Sailor Moon! One of the characters, and I shit you not, has a flying wheelchair.

It is just a bootleg trailer for the pilot shown at some geeky convention or another, so the quality is really bad but worth a look.

The American Sailor Moon was to combine live-action non-Sailor sequences and animated Sailor sequences. The cast, as it appears in that wonderful promo, was a rainbow of physical characteristics and abilities, including the girl with a wheelchair.

According to my brother (a respectable Norwegian-American otaku icon_razz.gif), the studios nipped the series in the bud due to how much cheaper it was to just dub the Japanese animé. I am happy that they offed it as an USAmerican series would probably have overshadowed the original series' potential in the US and in Europe.

[Yes, I want for there to be kid-targeting series that feature characters with disabilities; however, I want that series to be something that stands on its own.]

    ***
Given that the USAmerican companies that dubbed and distributed the original Sailor Moon series in the US dubbed out the gay (between two villain lackeys) and lesbian (between Sailor Neptune and sex-changing Sailor Uranus) relationships, was there any remote possibility that LGBTQ identities would have been explored in a US series?

Oh lord, now I've seen everything. I will admit to watching the cartoon, which I loved. I'd imagine that the live action series would be ghastly, but like a car wreck, you couldn't help but look.

I actually wrote a paper on Sailor Moon, feminism, and other cultural issues. I was obsessed w/ the show for a while, and I will admit to having my sister tape it for me and buy me the DVD's.

How can you hate Japanese people ("the Japanese") for something as adorable as Sailor Moon...
...when you can hate due to the abomination that is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animé?

[please insert "fault" instead of "hate" if you do not care for the latter word]

DISCLAIMER: the author of this post does not advocate ethnic, national, or any other form of hatred; the "hate" referred to is with a Gene-Simmons-size tongue-in-cheek.

    You know... actually...

This show is pretty damn good. I have the whole series sitting on my hard drive at home. Watched each episode as they were subtitled and put out.

    Blows the anime away, easily.

One word to describe the Sailor Moon Live Action, adorable!
I'd like one of each outfit featured in the show...in my size.

Here is another live action anime outing that I wish I could find for sale.
The little China man in it looks like he could be fun in the sac, LOL ,fake beard and all.

You say adorable, I say "please gouge my eyes out." Also, that awful TMNT anime really is included in my reason for occasionally hating the Japanese.

Besides, if you really want adorable Japanese animation, you need look no further than the faublous My Neighbor Totoro.

Hmm...live-action Fist of the North Star icon_cool.gif Too bad that intro sequences is (or at least looks like it is) only translated into Korean.
According to my brother, that is probably the Hong Kong series, which is nigh impossible to obtain (except for the clips posted on YouTube). Your best bet would probably be bootleg DVDs, unless someone uploads it onto one of the animé torrent sites.

    re: yalemarine
What was the jist of your findings? While I have not written about Sailor Moon, I have written a short paper on Buffy:tVS and feminism for a class.

    re: Chewey
Totoro has been on my must-watch list for quite a while...so I am now determined to see it through this month icon_biggrin.gif

    re: Chris
I think it would fairer to compare it to the production values of Norwegian television, in which case I suspect that Sailor Moon Live Action has good production values (relatively speaking). Norwegian television has historically blown (the bad kind), though has recently started a bloom of action series.

Sailor Moon Live Action has lots of actors and locales, as well as CGI.

Yes, that is a CGI violet-blue cat. They quickly exchanged the her with a plush toy cat (a stroke of budget-saving genius, in my opinion). Even without a mouth, she is far more likeable than he-looks-like-a-stuffed-cat Salem of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

    re: Jrdnstatz
You mean a coordinated, form-fitting outfit combined with stretches and an up-beat theme song, and having it all be magically put together by the words "Jrdnstatz MAKE UP!"?

Personally, I want a combination of Sailor Neptune's and Sailor Uranus' make-up sequences so that I may be guided by the new era and act with elegance and grace icon_cool.gif

By the way, Chris, this is what I call poor production values (or just poor production; it is a clip I choreographed earlier today):
