I just wanted to use my phone as a glorified calculator when walking on the street. Is that too hard to ask of an iPhone? Nope...my iPhone was up to the task but my hands had a different agenda.... icon_lol.gif

That is the ONLY reason I refuse to buy an iPhone or Crackberry. The only phone I'll use is one that allows the screen to be protected (currently use a flip phone).

I'm starting to think those phones are designed that way on purpose to sell more screens. Every person I've ever known (in person) with an iPhone has had to replace their screen at least once.

I found a full frontal replacement for $25 on eBay. You have purchase stuff that is 1/2 the price but I learned I had to peel the old glass off the assembly and put the replacement glass back on. I thought I'd buy the whole assembly.

There is a product that's been circulating throughout the UK and is slowly coming to North America from Tech21, which is an iBand case. It's amazing for impact protection in which I thought my SwitchEasy case would work. Just check out Youtube videos on that product's impact protection. My friend has the orginal 1st gen case and we can through it against the wall, drop it on the hard concrete, anything that you would 'accidentally' do and the case seems pretty solid. Looks like I'm gonna get that this time to avoid this $25 inconvenience!

I have a rubber armor cover for my iPhone from Speck for daily knock-around use, and an Apple screen protector. The phone's survived 1 fall with it already, no damage or marks at all. Plus the case is very grippy, I can lay the phone down on a slanted surface without it sliding off.

For more dressy occasions I also have a black leather cover from Sena, that includes some wallet functions. Both covers can also be attached to a belt with an accessory clip, and the Speck can be propped up like a picture frame either horizontally or vertically, but I almost never do any of that.

I have an iPhone and live in constant fear that it's going to slide through my fingers and shatter on some hard surface. Fortunately, two years later I've only dropped it onto a carpet. The iPhone looks great, but the slick back is not my first choice. I'm looking forward to the new model, likely being officially announced by Steve Jobs next week, but already seen online. I think I'm going to prefer that form much better.

There's a new glass called Gorilla Glass. Look it up! It seems super tough and it doesn't look as brittle as regular glass.

I never really worried about dropping my phone. It's been dropped so many times. Even slid off the roof onto the concrete. Luckily these devices are pretty cheap to fix thanks to the internet and being able to communicate with the other side of the world for parts. I can't wait for my shipment in the next few days. I'll be good as new again! icon_biggrin.gif

Unfortunately any phone with a touch screen (like the iPhone) has to have a screen made of glass and will likely shatter when it is dropped (particularly if it hits on a corner).

The best way to prevent this is to get a case cover. I like the one from Marware for my iPhone that is multifunctional and allows the phone to be used by itself but can also clip onto the included armband for workouts and prevents sweat from entering the enclosure. A screen protector is also good as it keeps the screen from getting scratched (think keys in the same pocket as your phone).

As a side note, I would suggest a similar type case if you get an iPad as they are subject to the same thing, only on a larger scale. I found the actual Apple iPad Case to be the best one for my needs, but there are a lot of good options out there. You can order screen protectors with a lifetime warranty from zagg.

Ive dropped mine like 20 times...its all fucked up on a corner, I remember the first drop, I was talking on my iPhone during Frosh when one of my friends hit my shoulder to get my attention and my phone literally flew about 10 meters before hitting the ground...nothing happened...after that my iPhone apparently became invincible

I have an otterbox, very impact resistant. I've dropped my iphone a bunch of times since getting it, no damage whatsoever. Also splash-proof...

I have an android samung galaxy, and watch ripped DVD on it while doing cardio on elliptic machine.
A bad pull on the ear plug cable got it flying on the floor several time, but it's still unscrached.
Samsung makes solid build stuff. (But their lack of soaftware update suck, I won't buy samsung again in the future)

    OUCH.

I've actually had nightmares about dropping my phone in the road, in the toilet, and various other tragedies. Very frightening for me.

Speck is very good, I actually have dropped my phone a few times and the case has always protected it. Get this! I dropped my iphone in the street not realizing it, and it was probably ran over 4 or 5 times. The case didn't have a scratch but the screen was destroyed icon_sad.gif had to get a new Iphone, but I am still using the same case.

With a contract these phones start at 200.00
I don't understand doing anything that puts it at risk. I am looking at an otter box case which haven't been released but until then I am super careful. I even bought the insurance from Best Buy but I still don't want to be without my phone.

That happened to my HTC Evo on Friday. I got out of the car holding the phone and my ipod Touch and dropped both on the ground and the glass shattered (just the Evo's glass). I called one Best Buy regarding a replacement since I bought their insurance, but that store didn't have any for replacement and didn't know when they would get any in stock.

And trevchaser... judging by that screen, are you on SF?

verizon has insurance...which i have for my droid. did you have insurance for your iphone? $50 deductible is worth it at about $4 per month....otherwise, if you aren't on a contract (with verizon, anyway) you have to pay full retail for your phone to replace it.
