What will be the pop/dance song that will define the Summer of 2011?

Well..........more than a year ago I did this thread for 2010.....and you can see what we all picked. Have to say I think I nailed it early with "California Gurls"....

However, 2011 is a different story! Sure a year later Katy Perry is still going strong with releases from "Teenage Dream". In fact, if "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F) hits #1 on Billboard as it is predicted to do as early as next week...she will have 5 #1 songs from that album ....to tie the record set by Michael Jackson.

But back to the task at hand. IMHO "T.G.I.F" is no "California Gurls" and I haven't a CLUE what will be the summer song of 2011. Maybe something by Adele?

So I throw it out to you guys. What do you think?

It is kind of fun looking at what others picked from last year.....but then lets continue the discussion at the end of the thread currently.....you will see my 2011 banner icon_smile.gif

Well I am pretty sure it is going to be this.....

But I WISH it would be this.....
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song---

Look at Kelly looking all Donna Summer like....

UPDATE" Have to say me thinks I was spot on with this one icon_smile.gif 7/13/2010

There could easily come out a new song that'll take summer over...

But I agree, Commander is much stronger than Katy's new song.

I'm thinking it will be Christina's new joint. It's a pretty catchy tune. Although I would place my bet on Katy Perry instead.

Someone needs to hook Christina Aguilera up with Trent Reznor or Chris Vrenna. I think she'd do a lot better with industrial than with pop. I think she's heading in that direction on her own, but she needs some guitar or something...

How is it that a 50 year old man knows more about pop/dance music than I do? I am the world's nerdiest 22 year old nerd in Nerdtown.

Ask me again in October; I may have an opinion by then.

Trendy? Or easily entertained? I'm goin with this. I'm SURE it won't be too popular, but I'd LOVE to do a thumpin' remix of it. I can appreciate all music, but I used to work in the damn clubs, and I don't miss the endless droning of Monotonous Pop Thrash. I mean, if I still worked in that damn bar, I'd probably know all the fuckin' words to that new Miley Cyrus song.

I just think it's cool Lady Sov stepped out of her box a little bit. Even if it was more of her producer's work than her own idea, she doesn't seem too out of her element, and I think she scores. For those who don't know her work, she is meant to be tongue-in-cheek and kitschy, and this is the first we see her hair out of corn-rows, and her attempting to dance. I hope her next effort takes another step in this direction. Props to an original act, straight outta tha ghetto!<object width=">

who cares? most of my pre-sets are for "oldies" stations nowdays... icon_lol.gif

"top 40" has degraded into derivitive, mindless pap..it makes "country-western" stations sound good by comparison icon_sad.gif

I'm not convinced either will make a big splash. Could California Gurls be any closer to "I kissed a girl"? Don't think the same lightning will strike twice.

Kelly's lacks sing-a-long qualities, which a summer hit needs. Also doesn't she have fab chest-hair in the pic? (I know it's curls, but still)

    Love this thread!

I like the Robyn & Kelly Rowland songs, just heard the Katy Perry song on Sirius BPM yesterday, I think it will need to grow on me. I'm always curious to see what Tiesto is going to release each summer!

    Note from the Op:

Well....just for the record fastfreddie(no pun), I used to be in the business. I ran hit radio and urban/dance stations so I try to keep the pulse on it....it is in my blood.

As for those who are questioning the Katy Perry song....I have to tell you, like it or not.....it is going to be a big big song this year (if not the biggest). It has all the right elements, hooks, etc. I am not judging the musical content, just the elements that make a hit pop record.

As for Kelly Rowland's "Commander".... the original release is definitely more urban. I just happen to love this remix by Ralph Rosario..... It would probably be too dance oriented to top the pop charts though imho.

    Daisy Dukes, bikini's on top.

Yeah, pretty sure Katy Perry's California Girls is going to dominate the [commercial music] Summer of 2010.
They hit the formula just right! The same formula that's used to make pretty much every Pop hit nowadays...

And Commander by Kelly Rowland, void of substance, will surely be a hit..

That said, I have to give them both props for making some damn catchy tunes. I won't say I haven't shamefully sung along a few times so far..

It's making a resurgence on some commercial lately. It will always be my summertime song. I can remember riding with my mother in her Plymouth Reliant on a hot summer day, with the windows rolled down and this song cranked!! She loved it and would belt it out as loud and proud as she could.icon_lol.gif
