luvitohateit saidOhai Madonna - erm - Gaga!
please. this video is not Madonna. one, she is doing an homage here. do we call Ulysses by Joyce a Homer ripoff? Gaga pushes boundaries further than Madonna did; yes, this is basing portions of the video from Madonna, but she is appropriating them, not repeating them. Gaga is far darker, more sexual, and more intelligent in her narrative (as in a cone bra verse a machine gun bra). two, this video is actually based on the the Steven Klein Academy photo shoot with Lara Stone (http://homotography.blogspot.com/2009/08/steven-klein-academy-lara-stone-w.html
), so please get your facts right before you see one Madonna reference and write the whole thing off as Madonna. three, this video is technically more stunning than any Madonna video it is borrowing from with a far more complex array of choreography, cinematography, costume, lighting... mise en scene en general. four, i think the intelligence of the statements being portrayed are far deeper than anything Madonna has ever done where Madonna's edginess has always been blatant in meaning where Gaga in this video is vested in a subtler handling of the piece. and finally, i appreciate the video for its gender-defying and sexuality-risque moments which Gaga explains as "[It's about the] purity of my friendships with my gay friends, and how I've been unable to find that with a straight man in my life. It's a celebration and an admiration of gay love—it confesses my envy of the courage and bravery they require to be together. In the video I'm pining for the love of my gay friends—but they just don't want me to be with them" and ""homoerotic military theme" [...] "It is a celebration of my love and appreciation for the gay community, my admiration of their bravery, their love for one another and their courage in their relationships."
i never saw Madonna do anything like that. it's really easy to just say this is a copy, but under inspection it's impossible not to see this as a genuine work of her own creation. i mean, how many people envisioned this is what the video would look like when they first heard the song?
