Speculation has run rampant today with the debut of a short "Mortal Kombat" film (subtitled "Rebirth") that made its way anonymously to YouTube. Now, Latino Review reports that the film is, as many theorized, a test for a potential R-rated film reboot of the video game franchise.

The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year's Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.

Though there is no guarantee that these actors will play the characters in a feature film version or even that a feature film will actually happen, the short is already a huge success online, with the word "Kombat" already a trending topic on Twitter.

That is freakin' awesome! I love Mortal Kombat and have been waiting on them to come out with a new movie for years! I'm not entirely sure I like how some of the characters were portrayed though. Baraka is supposed to be a bald-headed Tarkata, what is he doing with dreads? I also pictured him with bigger knives. The Reptile character reminded me more of Drahmin than anything else. Either way, I'd be so down to see this movie and I hope they start production soon!

Yeah I've seen it today, not a bad Idea at all. It definitely looks darker, twisted and believable. I would check it out.

    Also Note Worthy:

A 3 mintue (fan made) short film of Street Fighter that put the Hollywood version to shame. LOLicon_lol.gif

Looks interesting, hopefully they take it seriously.

The guys who did the fan movie for Street Fighter, worked on the Bourne movies, and have been huge fans of Street Fighter since day 1. They've also been sick of how games turned into movies have been butchered by Hollywood lol.

I have high hopes for the Metal Gear movie since the creator of the game, will help with the movie. icon_smile.gif

I like how it looks. No limits where the violence is concerned. That's how it should have been from the start. But I'm curious....who plays Kitana? icon_cool.gif

I hate that everyone feels the need to knock off Johnny Cage. He's usually the hottest of the guys. icon_twisted.gif

Crazy...I was just looking at this earlier today with a friend. It looks REALLY HOTT!! I love the new concept. Yea Sonya isn't that hott. And no one ever really liked Johnny Cage. Kinda cool how they shed some light on him and then kept it moving. I want to see who'll play Kitana as well. I hope they get a huge budget for this!

Damn, this looks fine. I don't like the look of Baraka though or the constant slow and speed up motion of the action sequences but I love how real world the characters are and the script seems really thought out. Even if it goes straight to dvd, I can't wait for this one.

I like it because its coming from a totally different perspective and the way the story is approached makes it more relevant.

Its definitely more of a mature concept. If they can get this right for the reboot, then hell yea!

Movie needs to be dark and heavy.

Cool short, and love seeing Jeri Ryan in there.

However I don't like the storyline rewrite. Why mess with something that isnt broken? Tweaking may be ok, but I say keep all the character's storyline intact, and go from there.

This is So fucking awesome!-so are they gonna actually make a film out of this?-Also I love how gory and gritty this is...the first ones were too tame and if they keep it dark and realistic with no boundaries this could be an awesome move...I wonder who would play who

According to Jeri Ryan's tweet, the clip is a movie pitch to WB.

"It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film."

"More MK FAQs: I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB... "

...(cont.) to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful...! ;-)
