Alcohol a No-No?

I'm in decent shape but want to get bigger. I've hired a trainer my age who is a bodybuilder in amazing shape. He thinks I have potential to be an "amateur senior natural" bodybuilder by end of summer. Whether this is just his way of recruiting me as a client remains to be seen, but I'd like to pursue this.

My question. Is alcohol a no-no if you are trying to do this? I like to go out once a week and have a few to socialize. I stick to wine or beer, about 4 or 5 over the course of the entire evening.

Bad idea? Does this set me back? Appreciate your opinions.

Good answer Maxx10. My personal experience as a non-drinker is that it is much easier to keep it all together as I get older because I don't drink. I don't have gut issues, or other side effects that go with the empty calories and carbs from most alcoholic beverages.
Good luck with your training! icon_biggrin.gif

I see it like anything else in my diet...everything in moderation. For my size, 5 beers would not be moderation in my opinion. That's anywhere from 500-900 calories just on beer not to mention whatever you ate that evening. If it's just once a week, that might not be a problem. I probably wouldn't do a heavy workout the following day since you're body won't be at it's best. Just realize what you're consuming and how much effort it will take to get rid of it. I know you're trying to gain but those are just empty, wasted calories.

    Maxx, bigguy, and bwg77,
Thanks for your input and the link to the previous discussion. I hope that dude has sobered up and moved on healthily.

I guess this one line there summed it up:
"alcohol inhibits muscle growth, slows your metabolism, and packs empty calories upon empty calories"

If I want to be serious about this, I'll have to always keep that in mind. I probably already knew this in the back of my mind, but I appreciate you guys' validation. And from the looks of all of you, I'd say you know what you're talking about. icon_smile.gif

    Club soda anyone?

This is the tough one for me since I like a couple of glasses of wine in the evening and a couple of coctails on the weekend. I have noticed that as I get older I have a hard time keeping the weight off my gut. So reluctantly i am cutting back on the wine intake. icon_sad.gif

A note from the biology end of things.

Alcohol is a super easy, super fast burn fuel.

What this means is that if there's alcohol in your system, your body will burn it FIRST. Given that, anything else you put in your body will likely get processed straight to storage... fat. "Beer bellies" are actually mostly the chips and such eaten WITH the beer.

Alcohol can cut both ways. I'm pretty sure you have already heard the answer.

Alcohol post work out will carb you up like no tomorrow (like waximaize too), lower you bp, and lower risk of some disease, but, alcohol also fucks up blood sugar, and is idle calories.

A little bit of alcohol will do you good, but, getting trashed will hold you back.

stop drinking beer. straight shots. or martinis. no calories, but alcohol. not really a bad thing. but working out the next day is going to suck.

and like diver said, its not the alcohol, its the crap you eat WITH the alcohol. how many times have you heard your friend say "oh god, i never eat at *local fast food burger place* UNLESS its 2am and i just finished partying..."

Alcohol actually has a ton of empty calories regardless of what form it's in. Plus it slows your metabolism, and your liver processes it out as sugar.

Look it up on calorieking.com if you don't believe me.

from their terms and use section. seeing as the only credible source on there is just nutrition information. im not too inclined to believe anything on there since its usually just people talking about things they've heard about and not actually researched. if, however, you can produce a scientific article that validates your claim, i would love to read it.

I love me some booze every now and then, but think about how you feel the next day. That can't be good for you.

I use cigarettes to control my appetite when I'm drunk.

    LOL icon_biggrin.gif

But DJ, you are carrying it so well. icon_wink.gif

But the next day? Yeah, I feel it. Yuck. That's where life's not fair. 4 glasses of wine and I feel like crap the next day. Yet some guys can drink a 12-pack and get up the next and feel like all they drank was water. I wonder why this is?
