    Hi guys.

It seems from the posts that you guys are all in regular teams or leagues rather than play at open gyms.
My Question for discussion is in your area, have you joined such a league and which do you prefer?

In Los Angeles, we have no Gay Leagues but there are mixed (coed) and straight leagues. Our Gay volleyball club makes teams at each night of open gym play but at the tournaments, people form their own teams and register them as such.

I really like my league and they way we are organized. Basically, everyone signs up as a free-agent and we organize teams based on skill levels so we have evenly matched teams (or as much has possible). I've played pick-up games in the park, that's fun too.

Like Timberoo I play in an organized league, as does my partner (he plays competitive though). The rec. league has 24 teams each headed by a captain. Before the season starts there is a draft so all the players ranked "1" are drafted, then "2", etc..

I don't know of any gay pick-up volleyball in Toronto, even the summer beach volleyball is organized!

I play primarily pickup, myself. I frequently get a team together for an intramural competition, but most of my friends aren't very good. And, actually, I don't know if any of the other guys who I play pickup with are gay...and I know most of the girls are straight...

I have played in three New York leagues:

Gotham (the gays, and favorite) http://www.gothamvolleyball.org
-- With Gotham I've played in divisions 2-4 (not playing this season though) and I've taken the Power A clinic. There's also a Monday night team clinic run by BAP ("Big Apple Power").

Urban (lots of gays, but not gay per se) http://www.nyurban.com/volleyball/vbcourt.html

Zog Sports (ehhh ... uneventful) http://www.zogsports.org/

Lawyers League (ehhh ... lots of lawyers, what can I say?) http://lawyersleague.com/lvl.htm

I don't play many open gyms -- they get packed, you have to show up early, and people get bitchy if they think they're too good or if they think you're too good. I'll play open gyms with friends now and then, but I like a sure thing ... :-)

Dallas has DIVA (Dallas Independent Volleyball Association). We pay dues for each season, and we are ranked by skillsets divisions. Recreational, Intermediate, Competitive, Advanced, Power. Members are drafted by captains at the beginning of each season so as to keep the teams fresh and different (for the most part).

As part of our dues we have open play by division on different nights of the week. Higher ranking players are encouraged to attend lower ranking to help teach them new skills, and vice versa. Lower ranking playing with the big girls as a means to get better.

Myself, I ALWAYS play better with people that are inherently better than me. Makes me step up my game.

It seems Dallas, New York, Houston and Boston have the best and most nurturing systems for Vball... that's probably why teams from those cities dominate the NAGVA tournaments (Although my LA team has Metaled in the last two we played! )

i play in a league at my gym. Its a bunch of old washed up college players who play EVP now. I HATE playing with them, but I love kickin their asses on the court.

I hate playing against straight guys because they feel a need from start to finish to defend their sexuality like im going to steal it or something...........................well I could.

But thats beside the point. . . . or isn't it?

Yeah nothing worse then insecure hetero males in competitive sport situation. By your pics it looks like you are a pretty good volleyball player. Hopefully you will get to play in a gay volleyball league someday. Some of the gay tournemants can get pretty intense. You will see the occasional temper tantrum against the referees which is really immature. Just goes to show you that gays can be as competitive as straights, just their voices can be higher! icon_razz.gif

I have no problem playing straight guys as a matter of fact I take special pleasure in pounding them and digging all of there so called open level hits. When I first came to my open gym I hadn't played in 15 yrs. Some people teased me not because of my sexuality bu t my abitlity. Now, amazingly enough the people that used to be rude are so nice to me. Not because they are good people but because they want to play on the same team. I am really tempted to tell them are you saying you need a fag on your team? ^^)

    What comes around goes around

    ^^

You are SO not too short!!!

Some of the most valued players are shorter than you!
If you can jump it doesn't matter in front row and if you can pass well or set well you will be in high demand!

I play in 2 quads leagues here and both are very competitive. im not the tallest by any means, but have played libero for a number of years for a college club team. i can say that i cant compete offensively on a 6's team but playing in trips or quads i could hold my own. i believe that like anything else the game is 90 percent mental 10 percent physical. i aint never scared when i step into the court.
