When I started weight training, I was 104lbs. Now i'm 130lbs. But I still kind of look skinny. I feel like so much fat is going to my stomach and I should start cutting. But ppl on bodybuilding.com always tell me to bulk. What do you guys think?

Also I notice ppl with my height and my weight look so much bigger. So I don't really need to bulk to look bigger. Maybe just workout more and consume more protein?

I'm an ectomorph. So won't doing cardio while bulking just make it worse.

it dependz on wut u want

some dudes like the bulked up look even if they be showing serious phat handles on them stomachs.
some dudes like to twink up diz world...to them anythang less than 2 ribs showing thru skin is an urgent sign dat they need to go asap to the nearest toilet and put a finger up them mouths.

but both are full of fail

if yo want to bulk up...then do it gradoolay...itz the best and healthiest way 2 do it. u can gain muscle and minimize phat gains if yo ass is dee-cee-plined in yo diet and workout regimes. iz really a shame when some dudes be bulking foeva and they aint got a friend or wife or sibling to say .."hey yo betta go on a cut befo' yo continue bulking like dat....cuz if u do yo meaty fukable ass is gon turn into a jelly flopper phatass" .. icon_lol.gif

if yo phat goes above 18%....itz prolly a good time to stop and switch yo diet befo u keep eating everything in sight

I've found great advice on bb.com. You mentioned it previously. The people in the forums are great (for the most part, anyway).

Also, I don't see any belly fat in your pics. What's your ideal body weight/look?

Yeah bb.com is great, but they always suggest bulking. Its a site for bodybuilders and I'm just trying to get fit.

My ideal weight is I don't know. I see some guys on this site and bb.com who are my height and my weight, but look really built. So i'm not sure how much to bulk to, so I can have a good built.

I just want to have some muscles and a built body.

My advice is to just enjoy the whole process. If you feel like bulking up a bit, that's cool, but what you do should be dictated by goals you set for yourself. There's no "right" way to look.

Ok at 130 and 5' 5" and if I had to guess your body fat I'd say around 12%. You're quads look pretty good size wise but your upper body looks like is where you need to concentrate on mass. If you want abs and definition your body fat needs to be around 7 or 8% but you could probably use a good 10 lbs of lean mass yet mostly in your chest, arms and shoulders. I'd focus on that for a while. Do you have a way to get your body fat tested? If you could maintain your body fat where it is and add another 10 lbs of lean muscle, it would only take you about 6 or 8 weeks to diet off the body fat down to 7 or 8% since you are an ectomorph. It will probably take you longer to add the 10 lbs than diet off the fat because of your body type.

If your body fat is indeed 12%, that puts your lean body mass at 114.5 lbs right now. If you were to maintain that and focus on diet now, you've got about 7.5lbs of body fat to lose to see your abs and have the definition that's going to make you look more muscular. Depends on what your goal is and how soon you want it.

Couldn't you readjust your protein:carbs:fats percentage in your diet so that you're getting the same amount of calories, but from different sources?

I couldn't give you the numbers since I'm just not experienced enough, but maybe someone else can expand on this idea?

I probably wont worry about getting cut right now. Concentrate on bulking up first by doing traditional powerlifting execises. Deadlifts and squats pack mass fast, along with compound workouts. Use cardio as a finisher to your workouts(if you have energy left), and do it only twice a week.

Thanks, you reply is very helpful. I don't have anything to test my bodyfat, but I tried the online ones where u put in you waist and neck size. I'm not sure how accurate that is. I was planning on bulking to 140lbs. So 10 more pounds to go, but my diet isn't the best.

I have college and work, so i don't have the best diet even though I try. I can't gain just lean muscle. I find it easier to dirty bulk and cut down later. Do you think that's a good idea?

    Thanks again for the post.

I don't agree with some of the advice you are getting here and from the stupid "brotelligence" guys on bb.com.

No way is putting on fat going to help you gain muscle. You will just spend the rest of your life unsuccessfully trying to get rid of the fat around your midriff. Fat cells never die, and as soon as they start to empty out, they create hormones that make you hungry all the time.

    Bulking is bunk.

If you look at progress photos of the majority of guys who grew successfully, they stayed lean all the way. That is the only healthy way to do it.

Bulk until you're happy with your size; then cut. After cutting, if you want more size, bulk some more then cut again.
It's all a matter of preference; and listening to others will only confuse you.
