I'm thinking of going to Egypt for about ten days in September. This will be my first trip there. I will be traveling solo and will probably use hostels, as much for the company as the savings. I don't have a lot of time for this first visit, but would like to see Cairo, Luxor and Alexandria. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has been there. Thanks!

I was there about a year ago for I think two months. Cairo is cool, lots to see and do, can be dangerous though! See the pyramids, both the step and "famous" pyramids. Alexandria is nice to go to. The library is interesting, but I dunno, nothing amazing. Its a nice place to walk around, go to the old fortress, good seafood there too! Luxor is a neat place, lots of temples and stuff. Consider going on a tour though, its definately worth it! I also reccomend going to the oasis if you can, sailing the nile. If you like to drink, look for places called "Drinkies" as they have every kind of beer for cheap! Enjoy the trip!

I was there last year too and it was amazing. We were there for about 5 days and literally on the shuttle on our way to the airport to fly back to Cyprus, I had such a sad, sinking feeling. Egypt is incredible and even though it's an intense culture with a lot of huge differences from the U.S., it's all so worthwhile.

Go to the Cairo Tower, it's right near the Nile and you can see the entire city. The Egyptian Museum is awesome too of course. The Pyramids/Sphinx are best right at sunrise, because there are less people and it's beautiful at dawn. Go to Memphis and see the old artifacts there, as well as the bazaar downtown for tons of knock-offs and food. Egyptian merchants are super, super pushy though they are really nice. They rope you in very easily to ensure that you buy something! If you're flying into Cairo, you'll apply for a temporary travel visa right after you land in the airport. Hostels will typically come get you with a shuttle and even though the hostels themselves may be in sketchy areas, the staff that we had was amazing and they were all really great guys.

In summary, Egypt is awesome. You'll love it!
